4x4 without manual hubs... do the axles and driveshafts always turn?

Hey guys,
I'm not sure how the newer style of automatic hubs works...

Does it just lock the diff? Are the front CV joints, front end, and front driveshaft always turning? that seems very inefficient...

I know with manual hubs, nothing turns until you lock them.. just not sure how the new design works...

any help?

Yes, they always turn. When 2wd is selected there's an axle disconnect on the right side. When the axle releases on one side the other just spins in the spider gear of the diff as it's an open diff. The ring gear, pinion and driveshaft do not turn which reduces the rolling resistance while in 2wd.
