5" screw + duratrac sidewall = CRAP!!

Well, today after i finally got to give my 4Runner its weekly bath...i Noticed a nail sticking out of the SIDEWALL of my Goodyear Dura Trac!! It being Saturday around 5pm, there isn't a tire shop in the 4 Surrounding COUNTIES that is open...other than WAL-MART!! The hell with that...not allowed there anyways lol!!! ~another long story!


ANYWAYS! the screw was sticking out a few inches and had not been there long when i seen it....(Sorry shoulda took pics but was :ybrick: well, against the tire...) the screw was right next to one of the notches of the sidewall and look like it went straight down into the tire...FML!! With really no options other that the one plug in the back of my 4Runner, I pulled the screw out and put the plug in, hoping for a miracle!! It is holding air now, but i have NO SPARE...:withstupid: yea! (i am STUPID...for not having a SPARE!! i realized this about 6 hours ago....)

Now i am searching Craigslist and everywhere else i can think of to find a spare tire on a Saturday Night, @ the southeastern tip of HELL!!! No tire shops around here will be open tomorrow either, with Christmas EVE being MONDAY AND CHRISTMAS TUESDAY, I'll be lucky to get a new tire by THURSDAY!! I really hope this plug holds air!! MY duratracs are rated D, i think??? I know that without a doubt i gotta get a new tire ASAP!! but i really cant do that at the moment, i don't have to go very many places until Monday, so hopefully I can go to the Goodyear where i bought my tires from and get them to put a new tire on...but idk what to do if they are closed!! which is gonna be more than likely...or they will have ORDER the tire...and that still puts me at not getting a tire until Thursday, Wednesday with any luck...and that's something i don't have much of!! So do you guys think the plug will hold well enough in the tire for me to do a lil bit of holiday traveling or should i stay PARKED??

Ever wanna kick ur own A $ S??? i sure do right now....

First, stop freaking out. Then, go buy a plug kit and a can of fixaflat, and don't worry.

I get my spares at used tire places.

Not "freaking" out...more Pissed off than anything really! I already plugged it so you must not have read the entire post...i just dont wanna but stuck on the side of the road with my kids because of it.

Thanks for the advice though...really came through on the plug kit....not much for used tires either, i am about 90% sure i have a "Road Hazard Protection Plan" on them...from where i bought the tire...then i can get a new tire.

Yes, I saw you plugged it. I also saw you freaking out in case that plug doesn't hold. So go buy another plug kit in case it spits that one out, a can of fixaflat or a cheap compressor so you can reinflate if you need to, and don't worry about it.
 
I have a few extra plugs at my house...this just put the cap on F*ed up day really...lol I know its not that bad and everything just the timing is pretty crappy i had plans on going wheelin' tomorrow, before all the chaos of Christmas, but dont look like im gonna be doing that now...:dammit:

Then thinking about ??IF?? i gotta run around on a plugged up sidewall for a few days makes me a little uneasy...hopefully somebody around here will be open Monday so i can get a tire..
 
I really don't have a spare either ( I do but it isn't on the truck, the tire has the metal showing) so I took it off to save weight for the time being. Maybe ill put it back on, driving to my cousins for Christmas dinner, it could get me where I need to go in case of a flat.
 
Please don't use fix a flat. Coming from a guy who's fixed a million customer tires, fix a flat does nothing but make a huge mess and make the guy repairing it want to kill a large litter of puppies.

Haha!! You got it man...I would never use that stuff!! I've heard it usual ends up causing more bad than good!! I don't want anyone going out and killin puppies lol!!! It's Christmas they need to be gave away...hahaha!!!! Just looked at my tire for the 1st time this morning still holding 35 pds of air... No leaks so far from the plug...blackcat, u deal with this stuff on a daily bases will a plug in a sidewall hold very long or will it come out?? I know it's not recommended to plug a sidewall but my options are pretty limited right now considering where I live!!

I plugged a sidewall once on a little beater Saturn I bought for $300. I drove it for about 6 months without any issues, it never once leaked. I think that chances are if it's not leaking now, you're probably good to go. I would replace the tire the first chance you get though.

Sorry, man. If I gotta choose between a $5 can of fixaflat or a $150 call to a tow truck, fixaflat wins :). It's saved my bacon a couple times, it's a great backup plan.

I promise I'll let you know it's in there before you break the bead, though. :D
 
The tire is toast. No offense but I'd rather use fix-a-flat and tell the mechanic it's in there and have him get mad than getting a blowout on the highway with kids in the car. I can see pulling the tire off getting a bit messy. What happens when you pull a tire off the wheel with fix-a-flat in the sidewall?

Hahaha, I guess I've just NEVER seen the stuff even work. Every time I'll done a flat repair with fix a flat, the tire was always flat still.

well, just like a plug can fail, fix a flat can fail too. So, it's still probably just as dangerous hauling down the highway with the wife and kids in the car with either a plug or a can of fix a flat.

Oh, and the sh1t goes everywhere when you remove the tire. Then you have to clean it all out because the tire won't balance if you leave it in there.

WOW!! i never seen anyone plug a sidewall on a car...usually the rubber is so thin it just splits when u try to put in the plug...that was one bad a$s saturn!!

I know the tires life is over...:redbrick: but i kinda need it to survive for a few days!! I will be buying a new tire first chance i get!!

I have seen that green slime stuff do some MAGIC!! LOL!! A guy i know, not a friend of mine, ran his colorado with some street slicks, the rear tires had the wires hanging out, he used the green slime and ran those wheels all summer LONG! He would even go on trips to Lexington Ky. which is about 350 mile round trip! believe me i am not saying i am going to do this, or that i suggest doing this...lOl!! just figured i would share...Green Slime is Magic LoL!:pimp:
 
If it spits the plug put some silicone around that screw and put 'er back in there. :happens:
