5 speed and lockers rare?

It would be easier to buy a 99 or 00 with 5-speed & locker & convert it to a Thundercloud Sport. That's my dream truck.

Agree, in the L.A. area the car lots(not "dealers" strictly speaking) have cornered the market. My 97 came from Tucson, AZ.

Going to agree with Aelfwine that if you want the rare 5speed with locker you are going to have to build it not buy it. Mine started out as a basic auto 4x4. Now it has a 5speed, gearing and locker are next. In another 5 years it is going to be next to impossible to find one without 250k. I have noticed there are more than a few 5 speeds for sale in the new england area with under 200k, frame swaps will be the next best way to get what you want like the tacomas

Found my 2000" back in 06" on EBay of all places. White SR5, 5sp, locker and a third row seat (that's never been used). 1st owner had it originally on Guam. He was in Los Vegas when I got it from him. Had 69000 on it then.

I to bought a 97 with auto. Then last summer I swapped a 5 speed into it. When I was looking for a 4unner to buy. I was looking hard for 5 speed and elocker. IMPOSSIBLE to find. Gave up on it and just choose the cleanest 4runner. Down the road ill add a air locker. Because I want air on board. Do you guys think the value of truck goes up if someone did a 5 speed swap? Vs it being stock?

I've owned two of them and didn't have to look hard to find them. Both just happened to pop up on craigslist when I was in the market to buy. Dumb luck, I guess?

No, I do not think that would increase the value unless your original transmission had high mileage and your replacement was a rebuilt or documented low-mileage unit.
You have to remember that 90% of the general car-purchasing population out there prefers an auto anyway. Only us toyota nerds particularly care if it has a 5-speed or e-lockers, and we account for a very small portion of the potential buyers for your truck.

4.10 locker on t4r is rare.
Locked t4r are 99% 4.30, so I got the 4.10 locked third from a tacoma, found a housing and did a rear swap.
Now it's the rare 4.10 locked t4r.

Got my 99 3.4, 4wd, manual, e-locker, no sunroof truck for $3800 with 210k roughly on it. 4:10's.
Not been a perfect truck, but all thing's considered it seems I did ok. I purchased the truck much less educated then I am now. I still would have purchased it for the terms I needed.

Most of the V6 5-speeds I have seen have the 4.10 ratio. It meant choosing Extra Value Package 4 (called the Sport package in later years), and many were equipped this way. The ones that don't have it generally have 15" split spoke wheels on the tiny street tires and no fender flares at all (no chrome strips, no black flares, no body colored Limited-style flares). See pic below.
Here are the production numbers for the manual transmission 3rd gens, in percent of sales
1997 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 11.4%
1998 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 8.0%
1999 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 4.5%
2000 Toyota 4Runner - 5 Speed Manual 2.9% (last year offered)
So not only are you trying to find a needle in the haystack with the 5-speed, finding one with a locker on top of that is even harder.
To get the locker you had to order an SR5 4WD with Extra Value Packages 4 and 5. Package 5 was the stand-alone locker option for the 4Runner. This is taken from the 2000 order sheet.

Well I felt pretty lucky when I found a 1996 v6 5spd with locker after only a couple months of searching. It was cheap too! Wheeling stick is the best.

Those are great stats. And now I can see why the dealer pushed the manual on me when I was in the showroom. They didn't want to get stuck with it. There was no way I was going to get the A/T with the 3RZ. That truck is a dog!

I jumped on my 5 speed as soon as it popped up on Craigslist. It's the only way to get one around here. You pay a 1-2k premium over a comparable auto as well. I had to swap in my elocker after the fact but I lucked out and it ended up being a really inexpensive swap.
I've driven my friends V6 auto with a similar amount of miles as mine and I could not believe how slow it was. And that was a stock auto, compared to my manual with 285s and tons of added weight

My old '00 w/ 5spd was awesome fun - see my sig - I knew it was rare but I didn't realize it was <3% rare! Mine must have just had package #4 because it had the 16" tri-spoke wheels w/ painted flares but sadly it had no rear locker.
