5 speed and lockers rare?

Im having a brain fart. I thought lockers only came in 99-00?

Im sorry but none of you have experienced a 5 speed 4runner until you've driven mine with with the TRD supercharger with the 1.25" URD pulley and the R151f transmission instead of the R150f. The R151f only came in the 1986 Turbo pickup. The R151f had much better gear ratios for 1st and 2nd gear. My 4runner moves like piss on and off the trail. And a word to the wise, if any of you ever see an R151f for sale and you have the money, snatch it up as quick as possible. That tranny is one of the rarest toyota transmissions in the world. Even more than the supra transmission. They only made it for 1 year and 1very rare model of toyota. Off roading with this thing is unreal, with or without a supercharger.

86 and 87 actually, pickups and 4runners, was an option for a 2wd truck in 85 also....doubt it had the same trans though.

Only some '99 and '00 4WD Limited models had the rear locker. All had the AWD, but the rear locker was still just an option.

I don't agree that the center diff lock (AWD) feature makes it more off road capable. AWD will not give you an advantage over 4wd off road - you will never go anywhere in AWD that you couldn't go in 4WD, but there are a lot of places that 4WD will get you that AWD won't.

AWD will give you an advantage on road though, in conditions like patchy snow or black ice. 4WD isn't as good in these conditions because around corners it will bind on the dry parts of the road while AWD will be smooth on the dry and icy parts.

Yeah, I knew it was an option, just was saying that the Multi Mode 4WD system was available on 99-00 4WD Limited models, as well as a rear locker (if optioned). Most 1999-2000 4WD Limited models as well as all 2001-2002 4WD models had Multi Mode 4WD. The only difference is that the rear differential locker wasn't offered after 2000, and instead of locking the center differential with the t-case lever (99-00), a center differential button was put in place of the RR locker button on 01-02 models.

Also, just to clarify, I wasn't trying to say that AWD would get you more places than 4WD. I was saying that the 1999-2000 models with the RR locker were the quote-unquote most capable of the 3rd generations, and if you weren't planning on serious off roading, then a 2001-2002 model would be more appropriate, as the AWD "setting" is more forgiving than having a 4WD model WITHOUT the Multi Mode system.

all those years were either full time 2WD or full time 4WD and none were part time 4WD?

let me know wher eim wrong.. the 95 Landcruiser, i think those were 4WD or AWD ... i dont remember?? is 4WD = 4x4 and AWD and AWD = just safety 4 wheel traction

Here's rare: '99 4runner (taller coil springs) , SR5 with sport package (Highlander edition)
5-speed, and Locker.

That is exactly what I want but not available in Canada. At least I never read about it being available. The only non-Limited 4Runner we can get that has body colored grille and bumper is the Badlands edition in 2002, but that is auto only, so there is no such thing (as far as I know) as a 4Runner with body colored grille and bumpers in Canada with a manual. Right now, any 4Runner 4WD with manual would make me happy though.

Didn't know what I had...

So I just recently picked up a 99 5sp SR5 with the e-locker. It has 108k on it, really well maintained arizona truck without any accidents. Apparently I stumbled upon the holy grail. Now I have to do justice to it i guess. I will have to let the newness (to me) wear off a little before I go wheeling though. It is in really nice shape and I am not ready to change that.

Yes, you should really look into what the E-Locker can do for you.
It is more useful off-road than your lift, or lights.

Not listed anymore but if it was a 97 then it would have to be the rear diff lock. No 97 was available with a center diff.

Note that the rear locker on the 96-2000 and the center diff lock on the 01-02 are located in the same position, to the left of the steering wheel.

Why Rare 5-SP & E-Lockers

When I went searching for a 5-SPD 3rd gen I only found them at used car lots. They are rare and when they are traded in for new cars the 4Runners are immediately sent to auction. I went to several used car lots who all had 4Runners and they all bought them at auctions. The a-hole dealers have scarfed up almost every last 5-Spd and E-Locker and in the Los Angeles area they ask a fortune. The dealers aren't dumb. They know the rarity and they charge accordingly. Best bet would be a private party but that has drawbacks. Before I bought my '99 I saw at least 10 at private party and they were all garbage. It was amazing what idiot shade tree mechanics can do with a roll of electrical tape and a box of wrenches
