Anyway, that was it. She turns over now. Thanks for all of your help! Now to see why it wont fire... it wants to.

I had a complete 5 speed parts 4runner. Same year and everything. It worked out well. I used the 5 speed ECU and engine/transmission wiring harness. Made it simple. As you can see from my thread, the only issue I had was the engine not cranking.

Really sorry to bump an old thread.

Ive got a 96. Swapped motor, harness, transmission and ecu from a 98 5 speed.

Finished the swap a month ago and then sent it to a buddy's body shop.
Just got it back tonight and ready to figure out why it wont start.

I have not done anything in the means of jumping or re-pinning.

I have all the clutch switches but i have not hooked them up.

All power works inside but 4runner wont start. No CEL at the moment.

Any help is appreciated.

There is no easy answer for this one because it is a complicated problem. The wiring for a 98 is completely different than for a 96. The good news is all the wiring for your engine and transmission is correct to the ecu from the motor and transmission. The bad news is none of your wiring is correct coming from the body harness to your ecu. What you need is two complete wiring diagrams for both years( the original and the donor) and figure out the differences. One of the plugs from the body harness to the ecu won't fit because the plug is different so that needs to be repined with the correct plug and then you need to figure out if there are any differences in the other two plugs that are on the engine harness which are your transmission wires and starting circuit. Its not turning over because the starting circuit is different for the auto and 5 speed and you need to find the park/ neutral wire and ground it or run it to the clutch switch, which simply grounds the wire when you push on the clutch switch. Good luck, Unfortunately no one can really help you too much because no one has memorized both years of the wiring diagram. Just remember the ecu wants specific information, so as long as you find the correct wire from the body harness, regardless of its color it will work. I would also look for a clutch switch off of a 96 or 97. The switch for a 98 has 4 wires and won't be supported in the 96

As far as the plugs they all fit correctly in the ECM.
The only difference ive seen between the 2 is that the 96 had an extra plug mounted on top of the upper glove box panel/cover, The 98 didnt use that plug in fact its void.

Im just looking for the easiest way to get the truck running at the moment.

I have the donor's body harness if i need to remove the dash and install it.

I also have my 96 auto ecu if its easier to run that instead of the manual 98 ecu.
