$50 Paint Job

I bought this '90 for $700 and even though it desperately needed paint, I couldn't justify spending more on paint than on the entire car. So I did a lot of reading and decided to give it a go with Rustoleum and a roller. I'm pretty pleased with the results. I'm waiting until I have some body work done to paint the rear left quarter panel, but otherwise it's about 90% covered. I need to finish the back end, finish the trim, finish the bumper, and then polish. The color I used is Charcoal Grey. The first few coats made me really nervous about the color, but more coats got rid of the brownish hue that was just the red paint beneath showing through.

As you can see, it's shiny. I can't wait to get it with a buffer. I'll be repainting the running boards with truck bed liner.

With in a year it will flake, chip and fade.

The better solution would have been to borrow a gun (or buy $85), borrow a compressor and just spray a single stage paint. Single Stage Urethanes are only around $100 a gallon for everything you need anymore.

Because I'm not trying to start a discussion on the methodology, I'll just say what you're describing is not the experience of people who have followed the steps I'm following.

Looks good. A little polish and wax and it'll shine even better.

I did this same method about a year ago. Still looks good. It has started to fade just a little, but it's barely noticeable. The only places it's chipped is where I've hit rocks.

I'm in Houston, TX. This 4runner spent the last 3 years on a deer lease in far west Texas.

It's a high density foam roller I bought at Home Depot. Everything I needed is stocked there except for the specific color of paint I used - that was special ordered (oddly for $4 less than it would have cost to buy one of the colors they stock).

I love the charcoal gray color. That was the original color of my 83 truck.

Then it went camo. Then I swapped the current red 84 2WD body on after the Toyota rust package took it's toll.

Paint the rims to match and loose the white walls on the tires

I too really like the charcoal grey/ gunmetal color , i recently did my best job of rattle canning my wheels that color, i think it looks esp good on a black truck as opposed to black on black, which to me can get too bland. I think Id paint the wheels black on your truck, but thats just me. oh yeah, I also prefer white letters IN...but as my truck sits i have white letters out (how it came).
either way, you're off to a really good cheap start!

Way to go! Can't beat $50!! Heck, actually I just did a Camo job on my 4runner with $40 worth of Krylon ,but still!! If it keeps the weather from rusting the 4runner than it is good enough. You did a great job considering the cost and all. Looks better than a guy would think, for sure.

Don't know if I'll go with camo patterns, but I do intend to go with camo color scheme to finish up my truck.

I'm thinking Olive and/or Brown for door jams and the edges of the bed. Not sure what else beyond that. May do Al's Liner in the bed (after removing carpet) and trying to do a tan with maybe some OD chips.

dont mean to be rude but you should have sanded it real good and just bought a 15 dollar gallon of rustoleum it would have lasted longer. but doesnt look bad

I spent days prepping and sanding - not sure what you're talking about. I bought 2 quarts of Rustoleum and when it's done I'll have plenty left over for touch ups.

you would sand it down to bare metal then a coat of self etching primer then 1 coat of rustoleum then wetsand real good, the another coat and wet sand again then another coat and again wet sand. i went to a state wide car show when the winner of the best in show trophy came up to the stand he proclaimed it was a wet sand rustoleum job and he left.

if you take the time and sand real good the rustoleum will last forever and look amazing its a self leveling paint so it can shine like a new penny.
