50K trans maintenance

getting ready to service diffs, trans case and transmission.....

is it worth it to pull the pan and change the filter at 50K. No towing with this vehicle. or should i just drain and fill? (and do filter at 100K)

I would not flush the transmission. I always had bad experience with flushing . I replaced my fluid at 55k and changed my filter. Definitely replace it. I never towed and my fluid was brown! This is a very simple job.

Did a filter and fluid for my 2007 rav4 back in the day and will never do the filter again. Wasn't worth the mess or effort and the potential of developing leaks. I had a small trickle of fluid after that. Wasn't sure if it was due to inexperience or a felpro gasket I used. Maybe both. Didn't believe in torque wrenches back in those days.

I did my fluid at 75k but wished i did it at 50k or 60k as my shifts were getting clunky and jerky. Used Valvoline maxlife without issue for 25k now and still shifts good.

If you change at 50k you probably wont feel any changes which is a good thing. Don't waste your time w/ the "filter" is its just a colander you use to drain your pasta. DO wipe your magnetic drain plug.

I wouldn't touch the filter personally. As far as the TC fluid, I changed mine at 60K and what came out wasn't much different than the new fluid that went in...

I did the drain and fill at 50K. I'm not about to drop the pan out on my dirt driveway. If I had a clean garage and the underside of my vehicle not covered in mud, I'd have liked to clean the magnets.
 
I changed mine and will not change the screen again. It should not need changing as there is no filter material, just metal screen. I did however clean the inside of the pan and magnets real good. It is a simple pan drop with a set of ramps. I only do drain and fill, never a flush. I do think a flush at 50k would not hurt anything. It is the high mileage trans that are most affected by a flush.
 
just did mine at 90K and I was debating if i was going to drop the pan and change the filter. Decided against it and simply changed the fluid, im guessing the previous owner didn't do prior as the initial fluid was pretty dark. Maybe its in my head, but it feels like the tranny shifts better
 
I drove my 1st Gen Tundra to 400 000Kms with a drain and fill every 100 000km or 60 000miles. When I sold it the tranny was still very crisp and never faltered. As it got high with mileage I believe I started doing the drain and fill slightly more frequently to keep introducing fresh fluid. Once the mileage racks up you don't want to disturb the small shavings in the corners with a flush.
 
Our 2014 SR5 has 290k miles and I’ve done two transmission complete fluid changes using the cooler line, filter replacement, clean the pan. It’s a very easy job. Sad what people are afraid to do these days.
 
I do not understand what's the problem people having to change fluid and screen at every 60K. Better yet, change it after 5K to wash out all break-in particles. Just stup_d to buy $50K vehicle and try to save $200 on maintenance
 
You got 50k in two years of driving and you don’t tow? I wouldn’t change the filter, I wouldn’t even change the fluid that early. At your rate, you could go 300,000 in 12 years. If you really want to keep your truck more than that, then maybe change the fluid at 60k and the filter at 120-180k. That would be my plan.

I don't tow, I changed it at 75k and immediately felt improvement. I believe Toyota WS breaks down a lot sooner. However I also dont believe color is a good indicator of fluid health.

I've used maxlife for about 25k now and am debating whether I want to try some thinner juice. Definitely not gonna fork out monies for Toyota WS anymore.

Next up, Idemitsu TLS-LV who's specs are the closest to a Toyota WS as far as viscosity.
 
Echoing others - I drained the fluid in the pain, dropped it, and cleaned the magnets at ~ 55k miles. The magnets on mine were fairly dirty so I was glad I took the time to get to them.

As a word of caution, the torque spec for the pan is in INCH pounds.
 
Ill be getting my transmission service done at my next oil change 60k. Curious what the dealer will want to do.

I did the dealership "power" flush and fill. $210 I think it was. Here's a recent thread, I posted in it a few times if you want to read up on some risks/ opinions of the various ways to replace the fluid.
I had it done at 144,000 miles. The service tech said they likely wouldn't have done the flush if I was past 150,000 miles. Scared me, but I did it anyways, and it shifts great, about the same as before but maybe firmed up a tiny bit.

No torque to wheels
 
thanks all for input. seems as controversial as an oil debate. The dealer told me 100k. I think I will drain and fill with the OE fluid.. and most likely drop the pan and new filter. I really dont want to drop the pan, but i figure it cant hurt. The only thing i dont like about that is breaking the factory seal and possibility of leaks with new gasket and of course the drippy mess with the pan off.

how many quarts do I need for the drain and fill?

BUT...just a thought???????

would leaving the partially used filter actually provide better filtration in catching finer particles?????????????

Dropping the pan and changing the filter is a most basic exercises. You would have to be a complete idiot to not get it to seal when putting it back on. Just wipe the sealing surfaces dry and install the gasket.

Spec says it holds 11.3 quarts. When doing a fluid change, I usually count on using 12 quarts, but have another gallon on hand.
