5spd Clutch question

recently I have started to get a slight noise when starting to move. is not constant and only does it from time to time. not quite a squeek, but not a grinding either (hard to explain as I am sure every one knows)

I am guessing my clutch is starting to get to the point of needed replacing.

so I guess my question is to folks that have had to replace there clutch.

do you start to get strange noises as they wear down?

I have 135k on my runner and I presume its the original as I am new to it from 117k on the clock.


if so are there better places to parts for replacing. (upgrade, or stick with OEM)

Great question--- I have the exact same problem. The clutch squeaks when the pedal is being depressed and takes more effort than other clutches Ive driven. 139k. Mine doesnt slip and Im inclined to drive it til I cant stand it any more.

my spring on my clutch pedal does squeak (sometimes), but that is not the squeak I am talking about.

this is more in the tranny area type of thing (I think). and it only does it usually when its first thing in the morning so far.

been searching. and looks like the centerforce dual force or something is a good recomendation. just dont know where to get them just yet if I have to go there

I am up to 193k on my original clutch. I bet you still have some miles in it but it could be your throwout bearing going? I realize mine is getting old so I have started shopping around too.

I have 165k on my original and it is still not slipping.

I have owned Toyota 5 speeds since the early 1980's and the clutch runs forever. They were all pickups and this is my first 4Runner and it seems to be the same. A little noise on all of them but the 4Runner clutch seems to be harder to push as time goes on.

I would not know how to drive an automatic...lol

Usually the throw out bearing will go before the clutch, that is when I replace it, you will know.

is it a continuous sound?
does it happen when the clutch is in/out?
if it's continuous, does the sound happen when you're in neutral while moving?

ok, the I can do on describing the sound.

morning time. come to a stop. clutch in and as I let it out its almost like a spring tweaking sound as if I was off roading slow and was flexing almost, but not fully like that. not a squeak like the pedal it self, I already get that from time to time.

No its not all the time. usually once I am driving it hasn't seem to do it.

guess the reason why I think its the clutch cause its a new sound, and only does it when I am leaving from a stop. not sure if turning right would have anything to do with that. I do know that there are plates in there that are spinning and such is also why I think it might be it.

I understand its a hard to describe thing. so I will keep searching and go talk to my Mech.
