When you order Toyota oem calipers from the Toyota parts stores online, do you get a core return when you send your old calipers back? Or do they not take them? Rockauto shows the core return price, I'm not sure if these oem Toyota dealer websites do the same or not. Contemplating going full 5th gen brakes... Thanks

nope no core return... but they do have reman calipers... so call them first before you order to confirm the part numbers

Did anybody have a hard time finding the parts for the 5th gen swap? Wherever I look online all they seem to have in the way of calipers is rear. Nobody has the fronts. Rockauto, Amazon, etc. Going to need brakes soon so just wondering if anyone else had this issue. Also who offers the rotors painted if I decide to go that route?

I did this swap not long ago, ordered everything from rockauto.

However. As a reliability upgrade, let's just say I need to replace the front brakes tomorrow.

Both sides have one frozen piston. These were centric calipers.

I ended up getting 2010 calipers today from advaced auto, they have a lifetime warranty. Also new rotors and pads.

Not sure how everyone else is making out but I expect to need to replace these in a year.

The current 5th gen brakes that are in it lasted 9 months.

The previous owner of my 4th gen did a 5th gen brake swap, and I don't think it was more than 5-10k miles prior to me buying it from him. I'm getting a pretty loud squeal from the front these days. Any ideas on what I can check? For the record, I did my own Tundra Brake Upgrade on my 3rd gen, so I should be able to crack this, I just don't know where to start.

Check to be sure they put the "shims" on the back side of the pads.

Unsure though if it's warped rotors or seizing calipers (or even both). Have considered just doing the 5th gen swap while I'm making the investment. How much does the 5th gen swap cost if quality (but not necessarily top of the line) components are used?

I was in a similar situation and did this upgrade in May. I paid $600 for parts (not including the optional steel brake line upgrade) and about $200 for labor. (When ordering from Advance, you should be able to find some 20-25% discount coupons.)

I also did do the 5th gen rear caliper install on 4th gen rotors. I accidently bought 4th gen rotors before realizing I could fit 5th gen rear calipers on. The measurements on the intial thread doesn't show much difference between the two rotors. My parking brake actually works now. Don't know what was going on before with my old rotors. Maybe it's just a placebo effect.

I've got 5th gen calipers and front rotors on the way from R1 Concepts, along with 4th gen rear rotors. Gonna do them when I do the lift, hopefully before Thanksgiving. Pretty sure I got the right stuff due to this thread, so thanks!

So my 4th gen truck had the conversion done but the PO used budget calipers and of cousre they where sticking. I bought fronts that went on No problem, but the rears i got from Napa the brake line hose fitting was to big for the slot on the new calipers (2010 4runner caliper). Anyone run into this?

I had read just about every post about doing the conversion. I did read in one of the post that someone with spacers and 16" wheels made it work.

They aren't really a "hassle". As far as I know the price difference is negligible as well. If your old stuff is failing and you have to get new stuff anyways, you may as well get "better" new stuff. I just installed my stuff last weekend so I can't speak to the longevity, but the braking performance increase is definitely noticeable. If you decide to do this swap, make sure to sure 4th gen rear rotors. 5th gen rear rotors caused a slew of issues during my install.

Thanks, this would only be for the fronts as my rear were replaced before I found this. Hassle/cost being core charges for the wrong core being brought back but maybe they wouldn't even notice. I'm thinking it may be best to buy local so I can have lifetime warranty for when they start to seize again. From what I've read it seems the Gen5 do it sometimes too.

Yes, but your better off not ordering the complete set of 4 like that because, as mentioned, the rear rotor has a different bore that causes problems for some. When I ordered mine, I went for the z34 towing/heavy duty pads, but everything else is the same. I ordered the pad and rotor kit for the 2010 front, pad and rotor kit for 2004, then ordered the calipers separately for 2010. The pads for the rear are all the same, as is the rotor thickness and diameter, so the 5th gen caliper bolts right up. The 5th gen rear calipers just had a slightly larger piston or something, so I went with those and then 4th gen rotors and pads. Very happy with the performance so far, and they look awesome! Just hope they last...

Awesome! Thanks for the quick response. I've been needing this for a while. Braking performance has been getting worse and worse.

Unfortunately, I'll need to replace my CV joints soon, and suspension. Its going to be a pricey year.
