Tacoma? Nah...not with the recent history of Tacomas and Tundras rusting to hell!! :sobbing: Not to mention that Tacoma and Tundra are now in the minority for NOT having fully-boxed frames! :shrug: Drum brakes?! WTF?! :barf:
Other than the Land Cruiser, the 4runner is about it in terms of my favorite Toyota SUVs & trucks.
True, the frame is lacking over its competitors. But there isn't really another Toyota 4WD option in the 4Runner's price range. The Highlander, I'll pass and rather get an AWD Sienna. The FJ, I don't like suicide doors and it's not as practical as a regular 4dr SUV.
Yup, the 4Runner is the best in the SUV and truck line up. I'm disappointed by the 5th, maybe it'll grow on me and it'll have some mid-cycle updates to the features we've been griping about. I'm not sold on a Sequoia because of IRS and its sheer size. I do like the LC, but for that kind of coin, I'd probably give up the latte at 10 and 3 for a few years and get its expensive cousin the LX570.

Just looked at a new 4Runner (dealer vehicle) and while I liked it there were a few things that were annoying. Not sure if we will buy on or not (need to decide ASAP as we totaled the 2nd car a few days ago).

Now one thing that is "funny". The radio antenna thing is just plain stupid. Now go to toyota's website and look at the pictures of the 4runner........ not one of them has the antenna. I am thinking they need to note that they have removed it. Just like they note what they have added from standard equipment.
Pretty sure the antenna will be gone by next year. One of those where someone saved $10 but ticks of 1,000's of customers and it was realized to late by others
EDIT in regards to the heated mirrors. It seems to be standard on the Trail Edition which lacks a full time 4wd option but not available on the Limited edition which has the full time 4wd option. I don't really get that part
in regards to key lock on passenger door side. My keyless entry on the Nissan Armada has run out of battery. I haven't had time to fix it for a few days (ok like 2 weeks) and not having a key lock on both sides of the car is a major Pain in the you know what.......
Still interested in this vehicle, but would have to be limited due to full-time 4wd and it is definitely settling for something....
Also does anyone know if the front passenger seat in the limited is heated? The description on Toyota's site indicates that it is not...

Toyota lumped the color key body features of the SR5 and Limited on one line rather than break them out into two seperate lines for each trim. It appears to be heated mirrors on the Limited, judging by the picture (2 of 10) on the interior pictures of the 4Runner on Toyota.com. If you take a look at the climate control system, near the temp knob for the passenger side, the rear defogger button appears to have two pictures on it, one of which I presume is the mirror.
I highly doubt it's only on one side only, but Toyota just didn't worded it clearly. I'm not an English major, but they should've worded the description as "Leather trim interior seating, heated front seats with 8-way power adjustable driver's with power lumbar and 4-way power adjustable passenger's seat." It looks like the heated seat controls are near the back cup holder on the center console behind the shifter, interior pictures (4 of 10). If it's only on one side, that is the most asinine design moves of all time, even worst than the Pontiac Aztek or Nissan Cube.
According to Toyota's Product Information document, the SR5 (4 and V6), Trail, and Limited all have standard heated mirrors. The SR5 4-cyl won't have the turn signal repeaters and puddle lamps, but it will have color-keyed heated mirrors.
I think most vehicles have done away with the key lock on the passenger side and even for the rear hatch. Seems like it's slightly better security-wise (I know someone with a Dodge Charger who had his car broken into twice by punching through the door lock) and, of course, it saves money. If it's enough of an inconvenience, it should motivate you to change the battery, right?
I agree about the mast antenna. Kind of strange that most of Toyota's press photos don't have the antenna installed. If they think it interferes with the photos, why would they think an owner would want to see it everyday?
OTOH, there could be a functional aspect to the mast antenna. I've driven a car with an in-glass antenna and the radio reception was terrible. However, I didn't have a problem with my 4Runner's radio reception.
So you guys bring up how you can't be in 4WD drive now on pavement etc.
What I haven’t seen mentioned is the lack of 2WD in the Limited. Not sure if this was the case on the 4th generation 4Runner or not.
If it was not then the change now is that they have gone from 2WD or 4WD (on all surfaces) to either a 2WD with 4wd for “slipping condition” / Full-time 4WD. Guessing there was a big cost saving and the reason they don’t have the full time 4wd on other editions is for mileage purpose.

On all trim lines of the 4th Gen, the V6 had a multi-mode system and the V8 had a full-time system.
It is cost. There is no difference in mileage between the 5th gen Limited (full-time 4WD) and 5th gen SR5/TE (part-time 4WD).

Some features went away, others that used to be optional are now standard--telescoping steering wheel, illuminated visor mirrors, reclining second row. Overall, the 2009 had about $70 worth of extra stuff. The price increase is just a couple hundred dollars, but they've also narrowed dealer margins. So the invoice price, which probably has more impact on prices actually paid, is up about $500.

Great site - at least for what I looked at the TrueDelta comparison swung it all back in the 2010 favor though. Looked at the limited.........
But the spare is now apparently (according to the previous post) a steel wheel rather than a matching aluminum wheel. It is still full size.
They did add something on the new 4runner: 400 lbs of who-knows-what. Since it didn't get much bigger, I'm not sure why the weight went up 10%. Kinda kills the extra oomph from the engine.

Basically Toyota has brought the 4Runner down to a level closer to the Nissan Xterra.
It no longer can be directly compared to vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee or the Nissan Pathfinder; it is a step below them.

Since I was looking towards my next vehicle being equal to or better than my current 4Runner, I guess I'll be shopping at another dealership.

Maybe for the masses the JGC and the Pathfinder are above the new Runner but let's see them go very far off road right off the showroom floor and the 4Runner is one of the last to use a real truck frame since the cherokee and Pathfinder have become glorified stationwagons.
But pricewise and utility I don't see how it still doesn't compete with it's more street friendly competition. I think the 4Runner is one of the very few SUVs that really is still an SUV since in TE trim it can compete with most Jeep Wranglers but still offer much more cargo/passenger space than even the Xterras but still maintain a sense of civility when in the city. It's one of the last real SUVs,everything now is basically a crossover.
