5th Gen amp install with OE non-JBL HU

I want to install an amp and sub in my '11 SR5. I'm assuming there are no RCA preouts on the back of my HU, so how do I hook up an amp? It's been quite a while since I've played around with aftermarket systems, and I've always used an aftermarket HU and I'm not sure how to get the signal from the radio to the amp. Thanks in advance.

You will need an amp with speaker level inputs, or if the amp you choose doesn't have those you can use a line out converter. The two are the same, speaker level inputs are just internal to the amp and would be easier/more reliable IMO. You will need to tap into four speaker wires to get signal to the amp. You're suppose to use a positive/negative from one left and from one right speaker.

How can I wire amp output into OEM wiring?? No OEM AMP

If your in there already replace the head unit. The main issue I have ran into is how to wire the amp output into the speaker. I havent seen any interface harness being sold the will simplify this. Can run wires dierectly to the door speakers since the rear doors do not have a small gap to slip in some cable. The rear doors are wired with a connector with the slight gap, the connector is very fagile so dont mess with it.

I had the same dilemma the above is my install on my 2011 sr5, I desperately wanted to keep the factory head unit, it works and sounds great but I think I am only using maybe 50% of the amps power because I have to turn the gains down nearly all the way, the problem is that the head unit is not that clean, if you turn the gains up you get a hiss. It sounds really good, but I know it could be much better with an aftermarket. For me, there is only one aftermarket HU I want and it is 1000 bucks, so for the time being I am keeping things as they are.

Good luck.

You need stock integration interface like JL audio cleansweep or DSP like JBL MS8 and stock HU will sound terrific.

yeah, I tried audio control LC6i, got bad ignition noise, tried all sorts of grounding solutions but it didnt make a difference so I gave up.

Just read through your thread and that's basically exactly what I want to do. I'm trying to leave the stock head unit because I want the 4Runner to appear completely stock. My previous cars have been broken into 3 times for audio gear and I'm tired of dealing with it.

It looks like you had to splice into multiple sections of the stock wiring harness - so the speaker outputs aren't just from one piece of the stock harness? Where did you get the pin-out of the stock head unit? I'm assuming it's the same on the 4th gen.

Actually, I didn't do any splicing really, I managed to get the male and female version of the connectors on the back of the radio, made my own harness, using 9 conductor speaker wire to route the audio signal to my amp underneath the passenger seat, then again using 9 conductor wire, routed back up to the factory wiring harness and plugged in with the female connector. I can change everything back to stock in about 30 minutes if necessary.

now, front speakers, I installed polk audio components, woofers in the doors, tweeters in the dash location, managed to cram the crossovers in the dash location and bought a bracket for the tweeters, I intercepted the signal comming from the factory wiring harness to the tweeter, this is the only place I cut anything, I cut that whole connector that went to the dash speaker and used the wires that continued to the door to feed the polk woofer from the crossover.

I am happy with it, but I want me an alpine 920hd, if alpine makes one of their Perfect Fit kits for the 4runner I will be having that.

Where did you get those connectors? If you got them from Toyota do you happen to remember the part numbers?

the female version was 70-1761 it came with a crutchfield installation kit.

the male version was much more difficult to find, it did not show up when you enter the vehicle info. i think it is 70-1398, I ordered direct from metraonline.com click on "Products" then "Turbo Wires" they sell these for people who have had their stereo stolen and wires cut, but it comes in handy for re-routing or making your own harness.
