Alright, so I know there are previous threads on this topic:

However, there are some questions left unanswered from them. The chief one being: does Toyota sell an OEM block heater kit for our 5th gen 4runners? If so, what is the part #? I've searched for parts on the Toyota's website and haven't found anything.

and

Are there installation instructions out there for gen? I know there are how-to videos for older Tacoma's, which have a the similar 4.0L V6.

I've heard about a heater kit from NAPA which goes for about $30-$40. https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/search/?text=3100129Has anyone had success using that one?

I have an OEM Toyota block heater on my 2011 Limited that was installed by my Toyota (Canada) dealership when it was new.

I believe that the part number is PU140-00905.

Installation Instructions:

Core Hole Plug Location: Left side rear.

Cordset Routing:

Route cord up and tie the cord to the heater hose with a strap.

Route the cord forward and go behind both the left hand side rear and front brackets attaching to the manifold and the cylinder head.

Tie the cord to the rear bracket with a strap.

CAUTION: KEEP THE CORD AWAY FROM THE FUEL LINE.

Route the cord between the front bracket and the engine oil fill pipe and to the front.

Tie the cord to the RPM harness, the battery cable and the transmission cooling line.
 
I installed one in my '14 and one in my '16. Some dealerships claim they can't order them when you give them the part number (region differences?) I bought both of mine from a dealership that sold on eBay. (searched for toyota 4.0 block heater) Install is the same as Tacoma Remove the Drivers side tire, figure out which combination of arm reaching works... Coat heater with grease, insert into hole (keyed) until it clicks. Route power cord. Whole process took me an hour both times. Just goes into block recess, no draining of coolant.

Has anyone used the one found on NAPA's website? Are the 2 pretty much the same?

These 2 posts pretty much cover it. It seemed a little tighter space compared to my 4th gen. You will probably have better luck ordering online. The dealership in Albuquerque looked at me like I was crazy when I inquired about a block heater.

I wouldn't recommend that block heater. I also have the Kat's block heater, which is what the NAPA appears to be, and it is not the same quality at the OEM Toyota block heater. The OEM Toyota block heater is machined smooth and fits perfectly in the block. The Kat's heater was a rough cast and I had to sand and buff it to get it to fit. Also the clip with the Kat's is cheesy and doesn't seem to hold very well but there is a wire harness that runs directly behind it so if it moves, it shouldn't go far. I would definitely go with the Toyota block heater.

The application only covers up to 2013 for 4Runners ... and is the PU140-00905 for 2010-2013 (5th Gen).

Not sure if Toyota changed this for 2014 4Runners and newer.

The PU140-00913 you have is used in Scion, Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Sienna, Venza and Yaris.

And if not, it's only ~ $55 and isn't the end of the world. I will report back when I do install (try to install) it with results.

Any update on this?

The PDF says 00905 but the excel you provided said 00913. Was that a typo on the PDF, since I can't find it online? Does the part # you used (PU140-00913) work for the 4runner?
 
Okay, so looking for some additional guidance on this block heater install.

I picked one up on ebay (part #PU140-00913). Supposedly the only difference between this one and another block heater (PU140-00905) is the cord that gets attached to the heater cartridge. At least that is how it was explained on a Tacoma forum.

1) The kit came with G-624 grease to apply the outside of the heater cartridge. I have also seen several online videos saying that it is a good idea to apply a dielectric grease to the cartridge terminals (basically the metal prongs where the cartridge attaches to the electric cord). However, the block heater application sheet (reference PDF provided earlier) says specifically to avoid putting the G-624 grease on the terminals. Is it okay to put dielectric grease on the terminals but no the stuff that came in the kit? What is the difference between the 2?

2) Anyone have a picture of where the block heater gets installed on a 5th gen engine?

3) Does anyone know if the electric cord will have burning/melting issues. There seems to be some sort of outer cable sheath protecting the electric cord, I just don't know how well it will hold up to the engine and exhaust heat. See pic for reference:

Dielectric grease is not electrically conductive, but serves to provide some degree of protection from the elements so it may prevent some oxidization from forming on the terminal.
 
I used dielectric grease on my wife's highlander. I opted for the OEM heater for fitment issues I heard about aftermarket units.

Block Heaters

I went with the OEM unit at point of sale a few months ago, with researching the aftermarket products I didn't think it was worth saving the $ on something which may operate at a sub par level. Yeah it added about 5 bills to the accessories list but it comes with two cords LoL. The connection point for the cord was put into the honeycomb above my drivers side fog lamp. The truck lives outside all the time and we can get some pretty damn cold nights in southern ontario winters, so I prefer to have that extra help. Have had them in all my vehicles, it's a great option in my opinion. I'd stick with the OEM unit if you can do it yourself.

Cause I can't see where they put the unit into the block other than I can see the cord with heat shielding around it routed to the back of the block (driver side), rest of it is tucked behind the fuse box / fender area then makes it's way to the receptacle installation which is a shrouded unit mounted in the honeycomb area above the drivers fog lamp on my truck. Pretty much the way you see it in the pictures on Toyota's site.

-40 degrees plugged in and went to start it after 12 hrs out in the cold, was rough but started, :bravo:another coworkers got a new taco and said the same thing, thought something wasn't right and I checked the electric plugs and they had no power:rant: electrician fixed it up, -30 today and plugged in and definite improvement:bravo:
 
Just finished an article on how to install a block heater including lots of pictures. I went with zerostart on amazon and was very happy with the quality. Seems to be as good as OEM. Install procedure should be virtually identical to OEM.
