I did the same thing, then my buddy who was helping (and doesnt work on cars) asked if we should start it. so I said sure, maybe the booster will help.

I guess there is a electric pump that works the rear. just turn the key on.

I have 04 limited V8, I believe 17 inch wheels. Do I need to cut the dust guard for the front ? or will be a direct fit?

You more than likely will have to either cut them or just bend them. I bent mind and no issues so far. I would double check your wheel size as you need 17's to get them to fit.

Rotors - use 4th Gen Rotors on the Rear... Use 5th Gen Rotors on the front.

I edited this post because I mistakenly thought we were discussing if the front rotor center bore is the same between a 4th gen and a 5th gen 4Runner. They are, I took measurements.

However, the previous page is discussing rear rotor differences between the 4th gen and 5th gen, which do appear to have different center bore sizes. I didn't upgrade the rear brakes on my truck so I can't verify the measurements for the rear rotors. Sorry for the confusion.

In my opinion, if you are doing the rear brake upgrade, you should stick with 4th Gen rotors. For the front, I recommend 5th Gen rotors.

Here are the Specs that back up what [MENTION=93297]AluminumMonster[/MENTION] and others have said...

I WOULD USE THE 4th Gen Rotors for the REAR and not the 5th gen.

You can use the 5th Gen Calipers on the front and the rear brakes.
You can use the 5th Gen Rotors on the front,
but I WOULD NOT USE THE 5TH GEN ROTORS on the REAR.

The center holes differ by 1.9mm between the 2010 & 2008 REAR rotors,

while the center holes are the same size for the 2010 & 2008 FRONT rotors.

2010 Rear Premium Rotor from Centric (Part #120.44175)-- Hub Reg: 108mm
2008 Rear Premium Rotor from Centric (Part #120.44128)-- Hub Reg: 4.18 inches (=106.17mm)
2008 Rear C-Tek Rotor from Centric (Part #121.44128)-- Hub Reg: 106.1mm

To Summarize...

If you want to upgrade your 4th gen to use 5th gen brakes...


Front: Use 5th Gen Calipers w/ 5th gen Rotors
Rear: Use 5th Gen Calipers w/ 4th gen Rotors (because 5th gen have a different size center hole).

BTW, I'm just looking at the specs and noting the size difference.
Anyone who's more knowledgeable should chime in to say if the larger
center hole on the 5th gen rear rotors would make a difference safety wise
or performance wise. I really don't know, but since the specs are different,
I would not use the 5th gen rear rotors on a 4th gen 4Runner.

Just not sure which caliper I have. I don't think my dad will go for the upgrade if we have the cut the shield.

I'll have to try and measure the rear hubs on a 5th gen when I get a chance... that doesn't make sense to me, because if the hub is different on the rotors; that means the hub relief on the 5th gen wheels would be different and not fit correctly on the 4th gens...

I don't know, but I'd love your input, and if you have a chance to measure some today that would be even better. I was planning on ordering new brakes all-around today.

And where is everyone getting their front calipers? Nether Advance auto or NAPA can get them for me. they have the part listing but its not available.

Same here. I did it like a month or so before this thread came out.

Scored rotors or a stamp looking burnt mark on the rotors.

Also, the wheel and the wheel well will get really hot.

When mine went yesterday, the wheel well was so hot when I got my face close, it was easy to tell. And I smelled burnt brake pads and saw smoke, too. Worst one like this I ever saw. What a joke.

The last time it happened I found it by accident, and saw the deep score the metal that was left under the pad material was leaving.

I have an infrared thermometer gun I got from harbor freight. If one wheel is significantly warmer than the others, it's happening.

Also, you can pull the wheels and look for uneven wear on the pads.

Also, if one of your tires wears substantially more than the others, then you probably have it. On my old 4R, one tire had much less tread than the other three. I asked my mechanic to swap the worn tire out and put the spare in service. When he checked it, that's when he told me the caliper was seized, so I needed a new caliper, rotor and pads.

They also said that it was very hot after a test drive.

Search online for the part numbers. You will find several links.

I found that partstrain.com had awesome prices, so I ordered from there.

I'm guessing that the fronts might be in short supply, because everything came within two days, except for the front calipers, which took four days because they were shipped from a warehouse in AZ... and I'm in VA. All the other parts came from warehouses that were much closer to VA.

Here is my old siezed 4th Gen rear caliper (only 7 months of use before it froze up so badly it smoked) and the new 5th Gen caliper side by side.

5th = TOP

4th = BOTTOM

Notice the 2.5mm wider caliper on the 5th Gen.

It bolted on directly with no problem. I reused my 4th Gen rotors.

I'm just amazed that the rebuilt 4th Gen caliper only lasted 7 months.

Pathetic.

I'm hopeful that this new, larger 5th Gen caliper will be better, but I'm not so sure this is the solution to all of these siezed calipers.

Who refurb'ed your 4th gen???? Centric? I'd blame 7 months to shit refurb not the caliper.... Don't most calipers last 10 years before some us see these problems? Spoke with mechanic, he says he gets about 1 4runner a year with a seized caliper... its not good, but other acura's he usually sees 10 times more. I think a lot of these second time seizing has to be something the refurb company is missing. My mechanic gave me the name of what he claims to be the OEM/OE maker for calipers for toyota. He said Advics. Is the who toyota gets their parts from. checking out their site it does like they could be.
Just replaced rear rotor with centric 5th gen. lets see how long it lasts ...
