5th Gen Calipers

Why is everyone using their parking brake when lifting the vehicle? Is everyone doing it on a non leveled driveway?

Everyone should be using wheel chocks. If you DO have the parking brake on, and you put the truck up on jack stands, be sure to carefully take it off before removing the rear rotors.

We are slowly getting there, after 3 long hours and by back hurting. Used the G2 caliper paint

Looking sharp! Make sure you let the G2 paint dry thoroughly before handling the calipers. I was impatient, and handled my calipers before they were fully dry. The result is that my finish isn't as shiny and bright as it should have been. My fingerprints dulled the finish some. Although it still looks good, it would have looked even better!

After 24 hours drying time, few suggestions I would make, buy a good brush the one that comes with it is just too small and annoying. I only remembered this when I was in the middle of painting them. I have done this twice already first on my gs and now on the 4 runner. Take your time with it, don't rush and remember you will need 3 good coats for a good finish. Also make sure to clean the calipers with brake cleaner before you start painting them.

Nice. Did you do any prep work prior to painting? I just got my 2 dupli-color rattle cans today. Instructions say to clean and scuf with 320-grit...

They are rebuild calipers from Centric. They were a bit oily so I just cleaned them with a brake cleaner. Now if you are using spray cans then I would suggest masking everything properly before any painting, my kit was a brush on. Most of the prep work for me was to make sure I have easy access with minimal moving calipers. If you have a rack or a bar where you can hang them of that would help a ton it would give you access to a lot of angles vs mine where I was some what limited.

Can anyone confirm that the 5th gen and Sequoia use the same parts? Some sites show them the same and some different. Local places don't have the front calipers for the 5th gen, but do have parts for the Sequoia.

No idea. As far as i know you are the first one to look into that aspect. I'd be careful, and very thorough. You don't want to start haphazardly mixing brake parts. Similar does not necessarily mean the same, and brakes are too important to be cavalier about the subject. I would think (but don't know for sure) that if the parts were identical that they would either have the same part number, or there would be a way to cross reference the part numbers. Again, that's just speculation on my part... I don't have a background in the auto parts industry.

Be very careful and extremely thorough.

I have the same centric parts waiting to be painted. I actually contemplated using brake cleaner as a prep, but wasn't sure if it would work. Haven't had a chance to open the centric boxes yet, but if they're oily, I'll do the same. Thx for the tips!

What year Sequoia were you looking at? On some year, the rear calipers are a direct fit. They are the same part numbers. As for the front calipers, I tried 2007 and up and they are huge. Will not bolt on. I believe it was 2007 or 2008 and up.

I recommend sticking with the 5th gen 4Runner calipers to avoid confusion. After all, if they share the same calipers as 5th gen, it will be the same part numbers

Just order the 5th gen from Rockauto.com and be done with it. They have easy returns of cores and they also have a 5% coupon code off just google it.

Never mind, I was thinking of the rears.

So I did the 5tg gen mod on mine with all centric parts from rockauto. I did the fronts 2 days ago. And then did the rears today. After installing the rears and taking it for a test drive. It sounds like the wear indicators are rubbing the rear rotors. Did I miss something? I installed the shims that came with the pads. I'll have to pull it all apart tomorrow to see what is rubbing

We couldn't get the wear indicators on my rear pads so we just went without them. You shouldn't be rubbing and I also used the shims that came with the pads. Drive it around a bit and see if the noise goes away.

So I've had the rear apart 2 times on each side now. I don't see any indication on the rotors of any rubbing but when I put it back together and drive it it sounds like metal rubbing on metal. I'm loosing my mind. I ordered the 3rd gen rear rotors and 5th gen calipers. Is this the problem. While looking at it apart it looks as if the inner rear pads do not protrude out past the caliper brackets far enough and this is where I'm getting the grinding from? I even took and flattened the brake pad shims Bc I thought maybe they were touching the rotors. But if this was the case wouldn't I see rub marks on the rotors?

What puzzles me even more is it's mainly only heard under 10mph and when turning right. When turning left the noise is almost non existent.

Also does anybody know how to remove brake dust. My front right caliper was down to metal on metal and pretty much ruined the paint

That is odd.

Can you carefully put it up on jack stands and take the wheels off and listen for grinding by letting an assistant hit the gas?

It's full time 4wd. V8 model. I guess I could try that. I'm sure it's coming from the rear. Because I did the fronts a couple days before the rears and everything is fine. It seems to be coming mainly from the right rear. I've got over 100 miles on the rears now when I pulled them apart but couldn't see any indication of rub marks on anything. I'm gonna pull it back apart next weekend and look again. By then that'll be another 400+ miles. I'd think I'd see where it's rubbing by then......or atleast I hope

That does complicate things; you'd need 4 jack stands and have to be REALLY careful.

Did you release the parking brake before you worked on the rear?

I wonder if you did what this guy in the below post did (check out the pic of the bent pin):
