5th Gen Calipers

Excellent description! Very much appreciated. I wonder if I can use the Surface Prep and Metal Prep that came with my starter kit rather than buying the caliper kit? I'd have to buy the POR15 branded paint either way which I don't mind.

Again - thank-you!!!

I need to make a correction in my "Quoted" post in post #618 regarding step 4 (Caliper Paint) to avoid any confusion. The first sentence should read: The Rust Preventive paint needs to be slightly tacky when you put the Caliper Paint on for best adhesion.

Did the upgrade today

Did the 5th gen caliper/rotor upgrade today on my 2007 Sr5.

Drivers side backing plate easily bent with pliers in the few spots that would touch the larger rotor. Pass side was easier since it snapped off when pushed...must be the 10 years of Buffalo road salt.

Bummer is finding leaking inner CV boots. That will be the next project.

I've seen several YouTube videos where people have used 2002-2006 tundra/sequoia caliper/rotors on Gen 3 4Runners. Did you consider this upgrade, or will these parts not fit on a Gen 4 4Runner? What made you go with the 5th Gen parts?

Thanks

Bigger is better & direct bolt up 5th to 4th gen

Just an update....I finally did the all the rear components (5th gen calipers, 4th gen rotors, and pads) after only doing the fronts last year.

I used Hawk HPS pads in the rear and swapped out OEM fronts for Hawk 5.0s.

Holy Shit.....the rear calipers did not appear to be seized but the originals after 170k must have been ****ed up.

My dead brake pedal feel is completely gone. Instead of having to double tap the pedal to get somewhat normal feel, the bite is nearly instantaneous after depressing the brake pedal. Braking strength has increased at least 100% and I now have renewed confidence on the highway that my truck can stop - and remarkably faster than before.

hello all I read all the thread through and couldn't understand, do I need to change rotors on 2006 sport v8 in order to install front and rear 5th gen calipers or is it direct fit?Has anyone with sport edition v8 tried it ?????

I am tired of paying 40$ for labor every 6 month for seized rotors(it comes with one year warranty with my mechanics shop)so I only pay for labor))).

thank you all for your input.

If you read the thread correctly. Users stated if you have a limited 4runner, you don't need to. But it is preferred to use the 5th gen rotors for the front ONLY, and all of them 5th gen calipers for Front and Rear. If I read the whole thread correctly...

I got the 5th gen rotors today and all four 5th gen calipers from Centric. Waiting to have them installed within a week or so...

ugh, that sucks, I changed my rot ors all around about a year ago and I bought centric drilled and slotted ones.they are still good for quite some time so I guess ill have to change 4th gen calipers one more time and then upgrade .

and what years of 5th gen are direct fir with 06 sport v8 runner?

believe they are 2010-2015. Are drilled and slotted ones any good? I heard they wear out the brake pads quicker and crack when they are old. I was looking at the Powerstop ones and they look nice. but people were saying it was just for looks and aesthetics.

they haven't gave me any problems yet, they don't wrap ,I still have about 40% of pads left in front .they were changed earlier than rotors by about 4 months and rotors are about 1.3-5 years installed on the vehicle.

I like them.

I have heard good things about drilled and slotted EXCEPT if you go off-road it's a great place for mud to get stuck! I'll be changing my break soon and still haven't decided yet bc I'll be doing the swap as well

I've had mine in my truck for several months now and a few thousand miles now. I'm not impressed with the price for what you get for this upgrade. Basically followed the same as what the OP did and I would of been better of just turning my factory rotors and getting new pads. Makes me wonder if the pads themselves I got aren't the greatest and if another brand would of worked better (stronger grab). Sure wasn't worth the $700-800 price of pads, rotors, & calipers of the 5th gen ones.

Pretty much the pads... crap pads can screw up the best braking system.

I used the Akebono Performance ASP976 Akebono Performance Ultra Premium Ceramic Disc Brake Pad Kit & ASP606. Seems like others used them and liked them.

Wow, you the first to report that this upgrade isn't worth it. While I agree that braking performance so far has been a relatively positive thing, in that there are no numbers of improved braking (objective testing results). However the consensus is that the brakes feel better. Good enough for me. The main reason for this mod is to prevent the stuck caliper that plague the 4th gen. So far, that seems to be the case and IMO this upgrade is worth every penny. My front calipers are currently seized and need to be replaced ASAP. May as well do all four.

I am running the regular Akebono pads and wished I went with the performance one's for better bite. I am actually surprised you are not happy with the upgrade. You might need to do a good brake fluid flush to get better pedal feel!
