5th Gen Calipers

Possibly stretched a ABS wire or damaged a ABS sensor.
You can remove the front abs wires an do a continuity check pretty easily to rule them out.

If you have a 2013 4Runner, you're posting in the wrong forum, this is the 4th gen forum and you have a 5th gen, you will get better help by posting in that forum!!

Just shipped out my old calliper cores to Rockauto today. I remember people complaining about the shipping cost...

Thank god I am not living on the far east states in New York or Florida, I can only imagine the costs being higher shipping from there. The Rockauto returns department is in Phoenix, so it was cheap sending it back from Vegas.

I live in NJ and did my front upgrade a year ago but just did the rear caliper upgrade. I only had to send my core's back to Rockauto in Hempstead, NY. Cost me around $15 to send the 2 back with fedex in the box that they originally sent me the parts in.

Also...side note to anyone upgrading...do all 4 at the same time. I did the fronts for the year and it felt a bit spongy until one of the back ones got stuck and did the back two. They feel way better and stiffer now.

Exact same thing here. I was at 170k on original rear calipers.

Oh, its good to know that Rockauto got seperate return departments based on location. Thats a big money saver for anyone on the east side.

Mine was original calipers for the front and back at 193,000 miles... it was long overdue for a change. Need to change shocks sometime since I am approaching 200,000 miles soon.

Decided to do this mod on my '06. I bought the Centric rotors online from JC Whitney; found a 20% off coupon, and they offer free shipping. For the calipers, I decided to buy from Advance Auto. Based on my research, the Wearever brand calipers are manufactured by Cardone, same as NAPA. I bought them online with free shipping, but will be able to return the cores locally. They have a limited lifetime warranty, so if they seize in the future I can just take them back to the store and get a replacement. I was also able to take advantage of a 30% online coupon and some SpeedPerks rewards from Advance Auto to save more money.

In case it helps anyone, here's what I ended up with:

Rotors from JC Whitney:
Centric 120.44174 Front Rotor (5th Gen): 2 x $64.32
Centric 120.44128 Rear Rotor (4th Gen): 2 x $39.86
Total after 20% discount and free shipping: $166.69

Rear Calipers - Purchase #1:
Wearever 19-B2737 Rear Caliper: $73.99
Wearever 19-B2736 Rear Caliper: $73.99
Total after 30% coupon: $103.59
(Does not include core charge of $65 each).
(Spending $100+ qualified me for $20 SpeedPerks award for Purchase #2).

Front Calipers - Purchase #2
Wearever 19-6279 Front Caliper: $82.99
Wearever 19-6278 Front Caliper: $82.99
Total after $20 SpeedPerks and 30% coupon: $102.20
(Does not include core charge of $88 each).

I picked up some Akebono pads previously when I found a good deal; can't remember where exactly.

I'm going to put some caliper paint on those calipers, because I don't believe they have any type of coating. Hope to install everything on the vehicle within the next week.

Thanks to all for their comments and insight in this thread!

Got in my car today after being in the academy for a week.. car has been parked.. brakes seem really "squishy" like almost to the floor before stopping squishy... HELP! Is it time for the brake upgrade? Looked at my front brakes/calipers and dad said they're fine.. didn't look at back yet

Don't listen to your father. I ignored my father when he said the brakes was fine and I changed the calipers and rotors and they WORKED better than before. lol

Caliper paint prep

Going to start painting my calipers tonight and was wary about painting the surface where the pistons are. I was told to be careful when cleaning/prepping the surface so I don't damage the boots. Any advice? I'm using G2 paint.

I'll post pics of my work as I advance. I plan on installing them this weekend.

Thanks.

They give you a paint brush so you should be able to control where you paint

Disconnect the battery and clear the fault. if it comes back then you have an issue somewhere.

I'll try it again, any ideas on where to start if it comes back on again? I did when it 1st happened and it came back on immediately, but at the police academy and won't get a chance to look at it till friday

Start with checking your wheel speed sensors. The wires are easily damaged if you aren't careful with them. Just trace them looking for damage.

Did the upgrade and now my ABS light is on.. any help would be appreciated

Happened to me, was the right side driver ABS harness. Was like 40$ from amazon, plug and play! You can also DIY a cable but I didn't want to bother for such a low price.

They give you a paint brush so you should be able to control where you paint

The small brush they give is a little too small, but it will do. I was asking more along the lines of "........ go ahead and spray the whole caliper with brake cleaner, but tape off the pistons.......... ".

Because the calipers are new (surface finish), no wire brush is necessary AND they provide you with a can of brake cleaner. I'm just going to cover the pistons up (so the rings aren't damaged due to the chemical nature of the cleaner...........i dunno, I could be wrong.............), spray they liberally, let them dry and start to paint them.

I can't help but feel that I'm over-thinking this.

There are so many choices on calipers. I'm pretty sure I need to replace my rears. I would prefer pre-painted. Have thought about just getting Duralast from autozone because of the warranty, I can take it back and get new ones if I need to.
Should I just be searching for 2015 sr5 rear calipers?

just did mine yesterday. havent been able to test it as i still need to bleed it all. fronts went on in an hour.. the rears tho.. omfg.

CAUTION on the rear discs.. major PITA. Mine would not come off.. tried the 2 bolts, sort of worked, cracked both rotors / stripped the threads they were so stuck on. took 30 mins / side with a 5 lb sledge and LOTS of pblaster (yes on the parking brake shoes) to get them to come off. they didn't seem to drag, but i'm guessing the rotors were original. the rotor surface where the shoe contacts didn't seem THAT grooved but they did not want to come off. there is SUPPOSED to be a hole thru the rotor to access the parking brake adjuster but not on mine. windows went nowhere. this is a bay area ca car its whole life - no rust anywhere. east coast guys.. get out the plasma cutter.

The parking brake mechaniism is a NIGHTMARE and i had to completely disassemble / reassemble both sides since it fell apart whacking the rotors off. it eventually went back together but it was HOURS of fiddling, cursing, doing, redoing, re re doing, cursing some more, thowing tools, etc. and now im sure the adjustment will be off on the parking brake so it will go to the dealer to get fixed and negate any savings of having wasted an entire saturday crawling around in the driveway.

never again

fwiw i went with all centric. parts are nice. in hindsight i'd get facory painted caliepers at any cost. i used the g2 brush on kit and it's also a colossal PITA. you have to do it in 1 shot since the paint wont keep, and trying to get all the nooks / crannnies of the calipers painted made me want to strangle a kitten. tape / hang / aerosol would be much easier.
