5th Gen Features/Models/Differences

Hey all, read the whole thread but still have a question. I'm looking to buy a 5th gen used with an apx. 35K budget and I intend to do some offroading (no King of the Hammers stuff, just your basic dirt road and ruts, small rocks and squirrels).

It seems to get KDDS you need to go up to Trail Edition from the base model? Do I need that or is the SR5 sufficient? I know its a bit of a vague question but any advice is appreciated.

SR5 will be more than sufficient. The KDSS is a larger sway bar that can disengage for better articulation. The thicker sway bar actually makes it handle better on road as well (less body roll). The trail model also has the locking rear differential, which again you likely won’t “need” for your use as A-trac, which all of the models have will likely be more than enough for what you stated.

Thanks Cymon, much appreciated!I'm and "easy" to "moderate" trail kinda guy so glad I wont need more than the base.

I have an SR5 because of the 3rd row not offered on the trail. You can check out some of my trips in my thread (link in signature). The Rig is more capable bone stock then people think. I am not a hardcore off-roader, more of an off pavement explorer and camper with my family but I have yet to encounter terrain it couldn’t handle. Honestly if it was too difficult to traverse with the stock 4runner, I’d probably turn around or find an alternate route anyway because my nerves would fail using my daily driver before the truck ever would.
 
Adiitional Mait coverage

I just bought a 2018 Limited... very happy with. My question is additional coverage after the 3 years. I was offered (what they say is discounted rates?) of another 4 years of warranty for $1400.00. Is this something I should consider?
If I should post this question somewhere lease on this site please let me know as well. Thanks much!

I bought my 2014 with 50k miles on it, and bought an extended warranty via Route66 through my Credit Union (coverage through 100k miles). It think it was about that same price. Very comprehensive. I have not had to use it yet, and I do not baby my 4Runner. I am told I may not ever need to use it.

I am not sure if this was offered from the dealer or the bank for you. Check both, many times banks offer good deals on these warranties. It can be very good for resale, people like them, but whether its worth $1400 is hit or miss. If something breaks, it could easily cost $1400, but the reality is 5th gens don't have alot of high failure parts from what I have seen. Personally, this is my first 4Runner and first 4WD vehicle, so I got it for piece of mind. Also mine was used, and there is never any telling what you are inheriting when buying used. If I had to do it over, I would buy the warranty again.
 
I know someone selling a 2012 limited 3rd row with 95000 miles. It's white with black interior. Is there anything I should look for specifically on this model? Pros and cons? I have 3 younger kids and like the idea of having the 3rd row incase I have extra kids with us. However I would be using this as a work vehicle so the 3rd row would not be used often. I tried to read through the thread, but was slightly confused. Is the limited always awd, or is it selectable? I love the TRD and older Trail models... but I think they are asking a fair price for this limited. I believe it is fully optioned. Thanks for the help!

It looked good starting out with the 2015 but then just bits and piece scattered over this and other threads. Editing with 2016-2020 and various years/changes would be awesome.

Just a heads up. He hasn't participated on the board since the summer of '18. I think he bought a different vehicle and moved on.
 
Hey all, read thru most of the post on the differences between trims. I recently picked up a 2016, but I'm not sure what trim level it is. It has crawl multi terrain select, leather interior, but it does not have a sunroof or the heated seats, best as I can tell the interior is OEM. I checked the vin and it all classifies it all the same basically. my best guess is that it is a TE premium or maybe TRD off road, doesnt have XREAS or KDSS either though. Did the sr5 come with the option to have crawl and mts?

Sounds like a TRD Offroad. The SR5 trims don't come with MTS or Crawl and the TRD OR Premium would have heated seats. Neither one comes with leather though, so it's either softex synthetic or the previous owner had leather seat covers installed aftermarket. Xreas I believe is only on the Limited and Nightshade. KDSS is an option on Offroad trims.

Thanks for the response, I meant to say the synthetic leather. I figured it was a TRD offroad or at the very least the trail.

2016 was the Trail model. They rebadged the Trail to TRD Off-road in 2017. Sounds like you have a Trail that the previous owner added aftermarket leather seat covers to. The SR5 did not come with Crawl Control or MTS. The Trail Premium would have heated seats. Also a TRD Off-Road would have a "TRD Off-Road" badge on the outside of the vehicle on the B-pillar, unless the previous owner removed it. The Trail models came with no badging at all. Even the SR5 came with an "SR5" badge. Some owners have added aftermarket "Trail" badges to theirs. I like that my Trail has no badging.

I had a chance to look at the truck seats more closely today, you're right looks to be after market, but whoever the previous owner went through did a really good job with. Doenst look aftermarket. I like the debadged look myself. thanks for the info

If I recall correctly there is a company that makes really high quality (p)leather seat covers that look OEM. Can't remember the company name but that's probably what it is.
 
Bumping this thread which is a few years old to see if anyone has a more recent link to the trim differences? I'm currently debating a 2022 SR5 Pro vs Limited. Thank you!
