5th Gen Frame Rust Touch-Ups

I live in a state that uses salt and other corrosive crap to melt snow and while replacing my brakes and greasing up the driveshafts last week I noticed my 2012 4runners frame is starting to rust. Only the welds are starting to rust at this point but I want to take care of it now before it really starts to look like poop or actually weaken the frame. Was thinking of using some Por-15 then trying to find a paint to match the satin or flat black color the frame is from Toyota. Have any of you done this to your 5th gens yet? What products have you've used and what seems to be holding up. I've used Por-15 in the past and it's a great product which is why I am leaning towards using it on my 4runner. I actually find it strange that my 4runners frame is already rusted this much this soon. My old 99 4runner Limited's frame at 230k was rusted about the same as my current 2012 and the 99 didn't have any undercoating or anything but it held up very well, especially for a Wisconsin truck. That's why I said I found it strange. Wonder if Toyota changed the paint or process they use for their frames from back in 1999. I remember when the Taco frame issues were big years ago. I hated getting them to fix because the warranty paid pennies for a very large job. Probably why they started buying the trucks back. Lol. Anyways my father delivers parts to dealerships and just this past week while we were driving to northern WI for a atv trip we passed a Toyota dealership, actually it's the same dealer I bought my 5th gen from, and I noticed probably 15 frames sitting in near the back of the building. He delivers to the Subaru dealer next door to that Toyota dealer and said that he's seen a lot of new and rusted frames sitting out back over the last 4 months or so. I guess there's another rusty frame recall or maybe a TSB for one of Toyotas trucks. Going 75 mph I didn't get a great look at the frames to tell what they might be off of but I think I'm gonna call my buddy at Toyota and find out. Possibly for our 5th gens seeing how rusted my frame is already with only 55k. If I find anything interesting out I'll post it for you guys.

Rustoleum semi-gloss matches just fine. Don't waste your time with POR-15. Once you get a 1/8" of paint on the frame it won't matter anymore

I have done several classic car restorations. This is what I use. Goes on easy and gets the job done.

I used 2 coats Rust Bullet Automotive (Only Comes In Grey) on all of my frame welds, and other spots that were starting to show surface rust. I then applied 1 coat of their Black Shell Topcoat (Only Comes In Gloss Black) to cover the Rust Bullet.

It is a similar product to Por-15, but reviews have shown it to be more forgiving with the prep then Por-15, and for it to hold up better.

It has been about a year since I applied it, and it has held up well. Initially the Gloss Black stood out against the flat black frame, but now that things have gotten dirty, it is hard to spot the parts that were touched up, against the factory coating.

I only had light surface rust, so my reason for using this is so that the exposed areas didn't get any worse. My prep included:

1. Hand wash entire frame with standard automotive car wash.
2. Scuff the areas to be coated with scotch bright pads or sandpaper
3. Hand Wash frame a 2nd time, to remove any residue, and rinsed very well
4. Let Dry overnight before applying Rust Bullet.

I used cheap paint brushes to apply both the Coating and Top Coat.

Rust Bullet isn't UV sensitive like POR-15, so you don't need to top coat it with anything for it to hold up. There are also no restrictions on what you can top coat it with.

Here is a pic I just took of my frame. The area above the plug has been coated, and the rest is the factory coating. I rubbed off some dirt, so you can see the comparison between the Black Shell Top Coat, and the factory coat. When it is clean it is pretty noticeable, but a few months of driving will make it dirty enough to be hard to notice.

I heard about rust problems with Tacos. Now it's the 4Runners that seem to be prone to rust. Is Toyota using low-quality steel in these frames?

Check out POR15, it's really tough stuff and gets much love in the muscle/classic car world. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube that show how to do the prep/application.
