5th Gen Glass Breakage Sensor

I have a 2011 limited t4r. Last month is was broken into and they stole a bag. They broke the rear passenger side window, and pulled the bag from under the package cover through the window. They never opened the door and the alarm never went off.

The other night, the same thing happen to my buddies Prius. Broke the back driver side window and pulled the bag from the back.

So here are the questions.
Does the 2011 T4R have a factory glass breakage sensor?
I've seen this thread

If so:
Can it be enabled?
Does it work?
Why wouldn't they just turn it on by default... like duh!

There's no glass break sensors.

It's why it's considered a security system and not really an alarm system.
 
On the '09 Tundra I owned, I was able to purchase the OEM glassbreak sensor/module which simply installed in one of the empty switch blanks and plugged into an existing harness. Went to the Toyota dealer and they actually enabled via Techstream free of charge.

Not sure if there is one for the 4Runner, so I'll have to take a look. Oddly enough, I sold that Tundra to my Dad several years later, and he had an issue with his dogs setting it off if he left them in the truck (I want to say I was able to adjust sensitivity on it though).

ETA: This is the one I bought and, now that I think about it, it actually activated the built in alarm system too: 08586-0C890

Can't find one for the 5th gen though, and we already have a perimeter alarm anyway.

This gives me an idea. If you have any sort of smart home network set up, like Smartthings with a zigbee/zwave network and park close enough to your house, you could at least get this sort of protection at home by mounting a glass break/vibration sensor inside or near the vehicle. Wouldn't set off the car's alarm, but could have it send a notification to your phone and sound a siren/turn on lights/whatever.
 
I have the glass break sensor that was an option when I purchased the vehicle. I think I found out on Toyota's accessories/add ons page when I was building the vehicle on their website. 2016 4runner. I'm sure it can be added by a dealer.
 
Pointless.

By the time you hear it and get to your truck the culprit is gone. Junkies dont care and are quick. Save yourself some money. The sensor isnt going to deter these thieves. They arent scared of sound and you wont be able to fly down to them like Superman in a few secs. Cause in 3 secs they r gone.

While it says it fits my vehichle at the top,

Anyone actually install this part on a non-limited model 5th gen?

Is this a DYI install or a dealer install?

Agreed with this point - which means an expensive aftermarket alarm is not a good investment I assume. So, if this is true, a good deterrent is your best option. My 2016 TEP has a lightly flashing red light on lower dash area when its locked. Does anyone know if that is an alarm of some sort? I think a larger blinking led on the actual dash might be a better deterrent..? Anyone seen a mod for this? Thanks all!
 
Pr could go the aftermarket route. I have an aftermarket alarm/starter it will go off if the car gets hit hard enough. It actually went off from just the weight of the snow built up on it.

Not sure I agree with no alarm being the same as a good alarm. If you can make breaking in a more difficult process or one with more risks involved then most criminals will skip to the next vehicle.

For my break in the fact that a window being broken in and no alarm gavebthe guy minutes to root through the vehicle. No alarm went off. The factory security system is barely a security system.

Ok good point as well. So, having said that would a brighter blinking led clearly visible on the dash be a good message to pick another vehicle? What does everyone think? Has anyone gone with an aftermarket alarm that they really like?
 
I ordered mine with the alarm/ glass breakage sensor. I agree that in a lot of smash and grab scenarios it probably wouldn’t make a difference but my thought was if it was deterrence just once, it may just pay for itself.

How do you tell if you have this feature or any alarm at all? Bought my 2016 pre-owned so not certain, but as I mentioned it does have that red blinking light when locked.
 
In many national parks the bears regularly break into cars in search of food. Alarms be damned. They are smart enough to look into windows and from past experience realize that food comes in plastic bags and wrappers. So the best way to prevent bear break-ins is leave nothing visible that is tempting in your vehicle. No food, no empty potato chip bags, no empty candy wrappers, no empty baggies, not even a shiny gum wrapper. Keep it totally clean. Nothing visible at all.
Think of thieves as bears.

I couldn’t tell you. On my driver and passenger windows there are 2 different alarm stickers on each. I believe the module plugs in under the driver’s side dash but I could be wrong.
