I'd be pissed if the dealer sold me some POS with heavy carbon deposition all over the engine because some dumbass decided he didn't want to change the oil.

I'd probably pay a visit to both their houses at 2AM.

I feel like climate could vary results substantially. Around here, cold starts below 0F are certainly not uncommon in Janaury and February. I voted < 100,000 miles.

Exactly. Here we have heat too which is terrible for batteries... I assum no service means... No service.

I double dog dare one of the people on this site to agree to having your drain plug welded shut, oil filter holder safety wired shut and sealed/certified as tamper proof and then run that new $40k 4Runner in your driveway with no oil changes.

Any takers? Engineers? Anybody who wants to prove this out? LOL

I hear crickets chirping. :-)

Nobody here but it is being done as we speak all across the US in every make and model of vehicle. Also being done in labs in Japan, Detroit, Tennessee, South Korea and everywhere else they manufacture vehicles. My friend is a nut case and he bailed at 100K. I would be the unlucky one.

These are the kind of threads I enjoy reading. Makes one think.

After a while who cares about;
The 10,000th comparison of skid plates;
The 50,000th comparison of AT and MT tires;
The 100,000th "how to" about led roof lights;
the 1,000,000th "show me your pink 2014 TRD".

Yeah, it is and interesting idea - that today's motors are so well built and the tolerances are so close that you could basically run the motor it's entire life without an oil change.

I guess if I was a multi-millionaire I might give it a shot, but I ain't so I won't. :-)

I had a similar discussion to this with an old co-worker of mine (not a mechanically inclined guy) and his theory was he buys the cheapest cars he can, the cheapest lawn mowers he can and runs them into to the ground and doesn't worry about oil changes.

So we started comparing notes and expenses. This was about 7 years ago.

My Honda lawn mower is (now) 21 years old, is in as new condition and I change it's oil once a year with Mobil1. It was expensive new - I have the receipt somewhere but it was like 4 times what a cheap mower cost.

He had killed 2 El-Cheapo lawnmowers and was on his 3rd. My Honda, still running like new even today.

I have experience with several Honda's owned by other people who totally and unequivocally abused them and unless you run them dry on oil they just won't die. Same for Toyota's. The old 22R? Not fast, but if you maintain that motor it will run forever. 3.4 in the third gen's? Same thing there. Mine had 115k when I traded it in and the damn thing used about a cup of oil if that between oil changes. Solid, solid motor.

So I guess it's one of those things that I'll never know for sure. My 2015 TE will get it's oils changes at what is probably way more than necessary intervals but since I only drive about 5K miles a year, we will all be dead by the time it has enough miles to prove or disprove this theory anyway. LOL

Don't forget the 10,000,000th "build thread" which usually consists of someone doing the exact same modifications that the 9,999,999 people have already done before them.

Newby here and looking for educated opinions:

I'm looking at a 2012 5th Gen 4Runner that has 245K showing on the odometer and was a company sales vehicle. I'm hoping since it was a company car that it was properly maintained for the past 7 years. Any thoughts on what kind of life expectancy remains on a 5th gen with 245K assuming it was taken care of mechanically? The interior looks almost new. The guy will take $10,000 for it. Deal or no deal?

I haven’t looked up pricing but that sounds like ALOT of highway miles. So if the maintenance and fluids records can be shown...I think $10k sounds totally reasonable for an 8 year old vehicle. NP not CP IMO ; )
