5th gen owner looking to add a 3rd gen. Thoughts on this?

I did briefly look at the buyers guide yesterday and saw the radiator/strawberry milkshake and a few other items. I just don't want to get into a money pit for a 3rd vehicle used only for pleasure. I imagine investing a few thousand into it if purchased on timing belt, water pump, radiator?, lift, wheels, tires.

You can quickly check for strawberry milkshake, if it doesn't have one buy a 80 dollar transmission cooler and don't worry about that again. The other problem is when people put in the GM coolant in the asian coolant and it makes mud babies - you can flush that out fairly well.

Just a heads up on this. Some of us Cincy guys keep an eye on CL for 4Runners and checked this one out earlier in the week. I didn't see it in person but it's from Michigan and has pretty bad rust on the underside and the interior was not anything to write home about. This is coming from my buddy who has a 2wd 3rd Gen with over 200k on his and is looking for a 4wd. Evidently he was checking it out at the same time as another possible buyer and they both walked.



Not trying to be a buzz kill. Just sharing what I've heard about this truck.

I bought mine with 160K from the original owner (80) with zero maintenance records. From the looks of it, it has been well maintained and the oil sticker on the window was up to date.

I saw it was 7000 but people here said it was 6500. Must had gotten so much interested he decided to try and sell for more. Shady.

Good advice from the guys here, I say bring a check list and a mechanic. If it doesn't add up or you think the owner is shady, walk. You will always find another.

Hey OP, if you are looking for a 3rd gen, as a fellow 3rd gen and 5th Gen owner, I have a lead on a 1997 limited with 154,xxx on it. Its right here in NC, and its not that far of a drive from Cincy if you are really interested. Shoot me a PM.
