Toyota has most certainly lost the edge it used to have over the other auto manufacturers. I think back to the 2000 model year and the Grand Cherokees, Explorers, Blazers, etc., were pathetic junk compared to the 4Runner. Fast forward to today and the GC offers more engine and transmission options than Toyota, a diesel engine option, really nice fit and finish and the thing just looks gorgeous while I find the 5th gen to be really unattractive.
I wouldn't even think of trading my TRD supercharged, manual transmission 3rd gen with factory e-locker for a brand spanking new 5th gen, not even for a second. When Toyota steps up to the plate and builds something MORE like the 3rd gen (including a manual transmission option) and LESS like the 5th gen, count me in.

I'd go Grand Cherokee hands down. V6, V8, Diesel, Hot Rod version...you have your choice. Better interior quality, better exterior design, better warranty, cheaper to maintain, more capable 4x4 systems, better fuel economy, etc. Just an all around better vehicle.
Of course, I'm one of those guys who would argue that they always have been. I've seen too many 93-early 2000s Jeeps with 500,000 or more on the odometer still driving to the trails and conquering them and driving home today.

I agreed with your first paragraph, but the one above hasn't been my experience. I know a couple of Jeeps that have made it to 200,000 miles, but certainly not troublefree. However American vehicles are getting better and I do think the new ones are more capable of longevity than older ones.

Well I think you guys should go and get one! Unfortunately right now there are over 130,000 of them recalled right now due to various electrical issues that result in everything from dashes going dark to 4X4 not working. I'm sure they will get that fixed and no more problems! Durability and reliability. You can describe the JGC with a lot of adjectives but those two words would not be included. You ought to try the 5th gen first before you pick the Jeep.

Yep, and how many vehicles does Toyota have recalled this month? Is it to a million yet? I know the Sienna was 600,000 units alone...not including the Tacoma recall. Your point it moot. Toyota trails only Ford with the greatest number of vehicles recalled in history.
The reason I traded my 2012 Wrangler Unlimited in for this old 4Runner had nothing to do with quality or enjoyment...it was all about $$$ and the Grand Cherokee's weak spot was 2005-2010 which was the range I was looking at.

Not really sure how this thread is still going. The truth is, you should simply be driving what you like. If you think your 3rd or 4th gen is better, awesome. If you think the Jeep is better, then go get one. Life its too short and this thread too long. Go drive what you want and stop caring about what others have to say about it.

Since 1999 (turn ofthe century) Chrysler has produced anywhere between 900,000 and 2.5 million vehicles per year. Toyota has produced anywhere betwen 5 and 10 million vehicles per year. Big difference. Even if Chrysler does have a much worse defect rate, Toyota could still easily have more defects on purely a nominal basis. I'd be interested to know that number I.e. Vehicles recalled per thousand made or something like that.
Second, NO ONE gets into a vehicle just for money reasons. Of course it is a big driver of the decision but would you have purchased the used 4Runner if you expected a high level of maintenance or poor reliability? Why not get a Pathfinder, XTerra, Explorer, Yukon, etc, or even just an older Jeep Wrangler? Of all the 9-10 year old BOF vehicles out there, I find it odd you would abandon a fully warrantied Jeep Wrangler for a 10 year old Toyota 4Runner and not bother with a 10 year old model of the same vehicle you were driving, especially when it would have been cheaper.

Toyota's recalls are for stupid S like floormats. Jeep recalls are because they are spontaneously combusting!

Toyota recalls are for "stupid S like floormats"? What? Do you ever read newspapers or watch TV? The Tacoma was literally falling in half. Then the redesigned ones in '05 had plastic beds that were shattering when people tried to do work with them. The Tundras were breaking rear ends, had camshaft failures, had air injection emissions failures at a cost of thousands of dollars to people now out of warranty. The 4th gen 4Rs are having frame rust issues, sometimes very serious. The Camrys have had so many recalls for engine sludge and failure, electrical fires, etc. that you can't count them all. Apparently you have "selective reading" issues.
ALL vehicles have their problems. But the people who bash Chrysler products as if they are junk are ignorant, in the literal sense of the word. They have no clue what they are talking about. Chrysler, and Jeep in particular, makes some of the best vehicles in the world. I have loved every single one I've owned...and the wife and I have owned maybe a dozen combined. They were all GREAT. I love this 4Runner overall, but when it gets old and tired there is a 75% chance I'm going back to Chrysler.

Dude, this is the title of this thread: 5th gen runner vs new grand cherokee so keep it there ok? I'm glad you had such good luck with your Jeeps. You should buy a lottery ticket. In order to keep bias out of this conversation go to a NON SPONSORED website or forum devoid of fanboys like TrueDelta or something. I have posted many times the numbers from there and the 4Runner visits the shop a lot less than the JGC and for less serious complaints and issues. Please don't call me ignorant.

You don't need a rear locker to do that in 4WD. BTW, yeah, it has a lot to do with ground clearance.

Yeah, that's the title. But biased comments regarding reliability and quality began on the very first page of this thread--OP himself said Toyota "has gotten cheap in materials throughout" in the very first paragraph of his original post.
You brought up recalls and expressed your extreme Toyota bias when you cited the Jeep recall for "electrical woes." And you've certainly expressed your bias--against Jeep--since that post. WXman responded to your original comment about recalls. But now you don't want to hear his "bias."
How does one not express bias when giving their opinion? The OP solicited biased responses merely in the title of his thread. How do people validate an opinion without citing their reasons why they have that opinion?
BTW, WXman forgot to mention the thousands of Prius Hybrids recalled because of a potential battery fire issue.
