Honestly, I'm waiting for gas prices to crush the overlanding market.

It'll be painful for awhile. You'll start seeing a ton of mods and heavy steel aftermarket parts hitting Craigslist and the for-sale section as people make a push to go back closer to stock, and improve from 12ish mpg back toward stock of ~20mpg highway lol. And it'll be ugly on Youtube, too.

But that said, it'll be better for the overall overlanding and outdoors community. People will stop Transformering their trucks into behemoths, and driving all over mountains and through trout-spawning creeks, and actually, just maybe, focus on overlanding to certain destinations, then parking the truck and enjoying the destination on foot, bike, kayak, etc.

You might also start seeing a cool next-gen wave of overlanding parts, focused on light weight. Wheels, tires, aero, etc.

So it's not all doom and gloom.

This Jalopnik article talks about how the Honda Pilot is a "badge engineered" minivan and how the SUVs and Minivans are converging. Interesting read.

I think this is a valid point, the convergence with some brands is real. Honda with a car/truck Ridgeline and the SUV/minivan Pilot is the perfect example. Side note, I read most of the stuff on Jalopnik and comment there occasionally. I think a lot of their readers say "minivan is always best." It seems they just want to justify the purchase of the minivan. I'm not knocking anyone that has a bunch of kids or stuff they need to carry in an enclosed space, but when you are a family of 3/4 I don't see why you'd want to be rolling in a minivan.

In all honestly, the minivan is one of the vehicles my wife and I have sworn we will have no part of. Between her Outback and my T4R I don't see a need. Apart from some of the classic 80s vans(Yota and Nissan had iconic style), all minivans today are just amorphous blobs. And if for some reason we do need a third row at some point we have already decided on a used Land Cruiser.

Counterpoint, if the choice is between a Dodge Journey and a minivan, PLEASE buy the minivan. The Dodge Journey is the worst vehicle on the road today.

Yes. Although the high resale value is mostly based on the reliability factor and how solidly the vehicle is built. That being said....if a dealership already has 3 or 4 used 4runners on the lot, you’re not going to get top trade value.

mini vans are pretty much the most practical vehicle you can buy. They just don't exactly have any road presence.

I'd rock a toyota sienna, if I had to.

3 gen 5s on my street. 2 more gen 5s one street over. They are everywhere in central Texas.

When I bought my Ram, traded for sr5 4tr, there were three Rams on my street. Two were at the same house. Then, six houses had Rams. I live on a short street. Even delivery people would comment. I have the only 4trs on my street. Now to see if anyone follows suit.

There are others around the corner, a Pro and another limited. I also saw a black one, which is the only black one I've seen, cutting through. It had to be older.

They're literally booked through the year with deliveries. We're so busy we can't keep up with the demand, it's insane. Great thing for everyone.

Fair points, all of these. I owned a 1g Ridgeline and it was *perfect* for 90% of truck needs. It won't haul around big rubber testicles, and it doesn't tow, but most people exaggerate their needs. But I never even test drove the new Pilot when I was looking for a new ride--Honda makes great vehicles, but they're being designed more and more unisex/emotionless/robotic/without personality. This will turn out bad for them in a few years.

That said, the Odyssey is a badass, and I'm glad we own one.
