5th gen sales have exploded

I still keep looking at new vehicles since mine is 7 yrs old now and I can't find ANYTHING that meets my overall needs better.

I doubt I will buy another 5th Gen, to me it's kinda like getting a divorce and marrying the same woman again after she got a makeover....

Maybe 6th gen or back to a truck if this vehicle ever dies- which isn't likely, lol.

Mine has all sorts of character now to separate it from the masses anyway- dents, huge scratches, pinstriping, chips galore- hell it's cooler than ever!

Haha, I feel the same way. Nothing out there that fits my needs better, but if something were to happen to my 4Runner I’d likely marry her fatter older sister and get a used 200 series. Same family which I love, just a little more unique and I know she wouldn’t cheat on me in the next 15-20 years. I’m no longer in the stage of my life to date the bright shiny new thing all of the time.

There are so many that I'm thinking about selling mine. It was sort of unique at one time.. Now it is worse than a JK.

It's getting there. I did a count today.. Still a few more jeeps, but they are becoming the same thing.

People used to stop me at gas stations and ask what it was and how I liked it... give me thumbs up.. My wife would drive it and come home talking about how many people stared and honked at her... Now I just get dirty looks and a few people shooting the bird in old trucks... LOL

It seriously has been a bit overplayed at this point. Oh well, it still drives great and has fantastic overall utility. I just no longer think, "cool looking truck" when I see one. It serves its purpose on the utility side. Just can't decide if I want to keep playing with it as a toy or move on to something new with more possibilities.

I don't mind it too much. I'm driving the vehicle I want and I'm happy with it. To me there aren't many vehicles out there like the 4Runner so I don't have many options either way. If I could afford a Land Cruiser I would but I simply can't. The only other vehicle I'd consider is buying and fixing up is a GX460. Otherwise if you buy a Tacoma or Tundra you're in the same position as you are now, except worse. Same if you get a JL.

The only thing that annoys me are the amount of new build threads on this forum. When I had my 2013 Limited I read through all of the build threads and enjoyed seeing them. It was a real treat since there weren't too many builds back then and a lot of the mods were a one-off and not cookie cutters. Now with the explosion of sales you see so many of these "build threads" that end up becoming nothing. They start of with some tint, plastidip, and the thread dies off after that. If you're not gonna actually build up your truck then don't start a build thread!!!

I've never understood why people like their vehicle less because it becomes more common on the road. Blue is my favorite color not because people like other colors more.

My guesses to why they are so popular are; for the most part, these 5th gens are pretty reliable. That actually means something to some people and some of the other SUV's just are not as reliable. Then there's the whole "SUV" thing, most of them just simply are not, they are station wagons. I think some people see that as well. A lot of the other SUV's just simply blend together in the herd.

We love our 5th gen and it's been very reliable. I also like that it has a decent aftermarket following, something most SUV's lack except the wrangler.

I've always loved Jeeps, I still do, just not today's Jeeps. Jeep lost it's way and it's sad. There was a time that Jeep was very reliable, just as reliable as Toyota, and they were better off road stock for stock than Toyota. Sadly those days are gone. I say sadly but only in part because what Jeep has become is what lead me to my 5th gen to begin with. I needed a new SUV, there are some very nice crossover style SUV's out there but that's not what I wanted. I wanted rugged, capable, reliable, and aggressive. Nothing on the market today fit that bill other than the 4Runner. I absolutely love it and I plan to keep it for quite some time. The only thing I really wish it had was a V8 but I can live with the V6. People say they're out dated, they want more creature comforts, blah blah blah. Go buy something for twice the price with all those things if that's what you want. Personally, I love the simplicity of the SR5. I intentionally bought the SR5, not because it was cheaper, not because it's all I could afford, but because it didn't have the bells and whistles that are absolutely not necessary. If you need lockers and crawl control to get yourself through the woods, you have no business in the woods to begin with. Learn to drive your vehicle, learn the skills needed to wheel, enjoy the challenge of it. It's time people start to enjoy their vehicles again and really learn to work them rather than let the vehicle do all the work for them. Hope that makes sense.

3 gen 5s on my street. 2 more gen 5s one street over. They are everywhere in central Texas.

House across the street has a Limited. Neighbour next to me had a GLK which he sold for a Limited too. 2 weeks later I got mine haha. The people I bought the house from also had a Limited.

I can think of 2 main reasons. They have actually become cheap by comparison too many vehicles on the road nowadays and they are one of the few actual 4x4 SUV's left.

When I arrived in the states 4 years ago the first 4x4 that caught my eye outside of the older LC's was the 2016 Pro in super white.

I saw it as it pulled out of a junction in the distance and thought BADASSS.. It took me back to my youth, transformers, storm trooper just aggressive, edgy and cool for a SUV. I did my research and came across this forum and the capability won me over immedialy, all it needed was to be comfortable and easy to live with/reliable and it delivered plus some.

From the 4Rs sheer simplicity to its off road capability it does what so many cars fail to do in this automotive era of over-complication and unreliability. I couldn't care less how many people own them mine has its own scars and memories plus it means more cheap parts when I break it on the trails :naughty:

The thing about 4runner, each trim is well worth the money. For a $40K 4runner, you get a very decent vehicle with good resale value and good reliability. $40K became starting point for many half ton crew cab work truck with small engines, and you get a basic small sedan out of Euro premium cars. Heck, the listing price for a Jeep Renegade can cross SR5 4runner price. Yes there is hefty discounts on Jeeps but not on Wrangler. JL Wrangler is more expensive than a well equipped 4runner if you want 4 doors and a rear locker. When you think about, gas is the cheaper portion of buying a new car. 4runner doesnt use prem gas or diesel, so it is really affordable for many folks.

Wow, a reminder that mine is also 7yrs old. Honestly I feel like I’ve spent so much time, money, and effort getting it to this I’d feel like a lot of that was wasted if I switched to something else. Plus my goal has always been 200k miles.


I’m much braver on the trail now that it has some love marks anyway.

To others that think it’s too popular, I really don’t care how many are on the road, the more the better as it likely means they make them for a long time to come. Stupid people drive all make and models of cars.

I live in Central Arkansas.

The entire state's population is a hair over 3 million. I swear that 1 million of those folks drive a 5th Gen 4R. In my town of 40k, I pass 8-10 a day. Some LEs, some SR5s.

It gets worse as you get closer to Little Rock. I was at the outlet mall last weekend, and on my parking row (20 spaces long) there were 4 SR5/P counting mine.. 3 black and a MGM.

Doesn't really bother me that there are a lot on the road. I have other reasons for wanting to get something different, every now and then. Have only had the runner for 4 months, so I don't have the WANT TO trade it.. yet.

-Ford Explorer
-Nissan Pathfinder
-Nissan Xterra
-Chevy Trailblazer
-Jeep Liberty
-Jeep Grand Cherokee
-Jeep Commander (which I still secretly love)
-Hummer H3


All of those vehicles, which the exception of the Grand Cherokee, have either been eliminated or moved to a car-based platform.

IMO, that really depends on which LC you're talking about.

If you're talking about the bloated, overstyled, overfeatured, overcontented, grossly overpriced thing sold in America .... well, thanks all the same.

To be fair, both Tacoma and 4Runner have largely tailored their trim offerings in a lot of markets. I traded in my 07 SR5 4WD and was in the market for either a Taco or a new 4R. You wouldn't believe how many of both in FL are 2WD. I ran into so many that were appealing but weren't 4WD.

As many "enthusiasts" as there are out there, there's more (and growing) number of people who simply use their 4Runner as a cooler mini-van daily driving grocery getting, kids to school vehicle.

This is going to only continue as oil bounces in range for the next 15 years. There's so much potential capacity on tap now that fuel prices are going to stay in a steady range for over a decade.

That's why you're seeing manufacturers scale back sedans which aren't selling, cause everyone wants the size and convenience of an SUV (as long as fuel stays reasonable).

Picked one up this weekend and actually pick it up tomorrow. I am so glad I made the choice. I started seeing them all over the place once I started looking, but not many that weren't limited or black around here. So I will stand out some haha.

The biggest detractor of the T4R is the fuel economy. It's no longer "class leading" and even the Tacoma isn't the economy option it once was.

Toyota does a service/credit to owners by not drastically changing the 4R or the Tacoma vastly with generation changes (this helps resale values) but the 4R is destined for a major change to the power plant eventually when the price of fuel climbs. But that's a LONG LONG way away now.

Eventually it'll transition to either hybrid or small twin turbo or electric, but they can stay with 20mpg right now because fuel is cheap (relative to the index).
