5th gen sales have exploded

Not at all surprising as I made the jump to a 2017 in the fall. I owned 2 other 4th gens before jumping to the 5th gen, but I was ready for a new vehicle with some of the newer technology and amenities. Definitely loving my decision even though my 08 was paid off.

I think mine is still unique (I have Trail -2010-2013 vintage), I would venture to say out of all 5th gen sold, trail model of those years maybe comprise 5% ... and that is probably high number.
Here in North Texas the number of those trails I see in a year is in a single digit. And when you add “in sliver” color I only saw two last year... and one of them was mine… LOL.
 
The 5th gen is like a minivan that wears less, gets nearly the same gas mileage, has better depreciation, and can go offroad or onroad during inclement weather.

It seems like people are suddenly getting very tired of features and benefits, and just want a car to get them from Pt A to B without drama.

Yes, the original trails are clearly the best lookers. But once you modify them.. they all sort of look the same anyway because besides the plastics.. they are all the same. But they did have a more classic look back then.

To sum up the market for 5th gens now.. My neighbors 19 year old son ran up to me yesterday saying "I want to ask you about your truck. I decided I want one and want to trick it out". He asked a few questions about model years then asked if they were 4wd. That pretty much sums it up.

I’m much braver on the trail now that it has some love marks anyway.

To others that think it’s too popular, I really don’t care how many are on the road, the more the better as it likely means they make them for a long time to come. Stupid people drive all make and models of cars.

The more that are on the road, means more that you can find parts from in the boneyards down the road.

The 4x4 scene exists there but its not as accessible to everyone being such a small island. Also as a Londoner you have to travel quite a way to get a taste of mud that isn't private land 4-8hrs driving plus $11 a gallon :-/.

I used to have a disco that was my DD but I've mostly been part of the car trackday scene, building fast road/track cars. I'm loving the 4x4 offerings here, that is one thing I really love stateside.

Hold your horses. According to this site, T4R year-over-year (2017 to 2018) sales figures have declined a bit with the exception of January.

Toyota 4Runner US car sales figures

This is likely due to the design getting long in the tooth and prospective buyers assuming there's a new generation just around the corner. Or not... who knows... who cares?

lol sorry but no. As an owner of a Honda Odyssey, the 4Runner isn't even close to being able to replace the functionality of a minivan.

My Odyessy has way better gas mileage, much more cargo room comfortable seating for 6-7 people, low load floors (very important for little kids), factory rear seat entertainment (very important for parents), drives like a car and of course has the power sliding doors.

I wouldn't trade my 4Runner for it, but it cannot in any way replace my minivan. :)
 
I don't think I've had anyone in my 4runner that hasn't asked me nonstop questions about it.
Everyone loves it. I'm not surprised that they're popular, but they've been popular for a while. I see them where ever I go, and often it's women in their 30's driving them.

Actually, I've tried to convince several people that a minivan would be a better fit when they start asking questions. I find a lot of people like the look of them, and that's where car shopping ends for most.

The average family of 4-5 can do fine in either one. Just not a wimpy family.

My 3 year old nephews and niece had no problem getting into my lifted 3rd gen, which was higher than our 5th gen.

What's happening is you're mistaking your kids not being able to get into the minivan with not WANTING to lol.
 
initially looking at the numbers, I was thinking, oh, well, that's smart actually. the last two or three years of each model the numbers were down a lot, so it makes sense that they came out with a new version afterwards. Then I realized that the low years coincide with bad economy years.

Styling and the Toyota brand/quality/perceived capability lured me in to the market... and the general kinda lifestyle of the poor man's LC or Defender.
But that said...(disclaimer, relative OR noob)... I was blown away by what this vehicle can do in 4 Low w/ ATRAC on, up at Barnwell Mtn this past weekend. I mean for it to crawl up/down that stuff, articulating all over the place...and then to pull out on the HWY and cruise up to 75 mph without a single shudder or issue... pretty damn amazing if you ask me... So styling, longevity, and awesome OR capability for 30-40K... makes sense to me. Toyota has nailed one of the four "Ps" down ... PRODUCT.
