lol sorry but no. As an owner of a Honda Odyssey, the 4Runner isn't even close to being able to replace the functionality of a minivan.

My Odyessy has way better gas mileage, much more cargo room comfortable seating for 6-7 people, low load floors (very important for little kids), factory rear seat entertainment (very important for parents), drives like a car and of course has the power sliding doors.

I wouldn't trade my 4Runner for it, but it cannot in any way replace my minivan. :)

I tried and tried to convince the wife that a van would make more sense but liked that badassery of the 4Runner. She being a Hawaiian girl also wants to stay Hawaiian as possible and drive only 4runners and Toyota’s. Now here we are 19mpg average and pain in the ass access 3rd seats. Terrible accerlation. But I welcome it like an adopted infant.

WUT? You mean Americans are spending more than they make? Again? Noooo that doesn't happen here. Lest we forget so soon the errors of our past. I mean common we just starting pulling out of a nasty ass recession.
 
they offer 96 month loans these days! eight years! even the most reliable vehicles with great resale value are going to be upside down if you finance over 8 years!

you should never get an auto loan that will be upside down for any part of the loan period but unfortunately that's probably most auto loans today
 
Honestly, I'm waiting for gas prices to crush the overlanding market.

It'll be painful for awhile. You'll start seeing a ton of mods and heavy steel aftermarket parts hitting Craigslist and the for-sale section as people make a push to go back closer to stock, and improve from 12ish mpg back toward stock of ~20mpg highway lol. And it'll be ugly on Youtube, too.

But that said, it'll be better for the overall overlanding and outdoors community. People will stop Transformering their trucks into behemoths, and driving all over mountains and through trout-spawning creeks, and actually, just maybe, focus on overlanding to certain destinations, then parking the truck and enjoying the destination on foot, bike, kayak, etc.

You might also start seeing a cool next-gen wave of overlanding parts, focused on light weight. Wheels, tires, aero, etc.

So it's not all doom and gloom.

When I was looking for vehicles a few years ago, I checked some used car dealers, including Carmax. Sometimes I saw cars that were one year old or current year being sold for like $1k less than a new one and wondered who in their right mind would buy that car (price is non negotiable at Carmax). Found out that those cars were usually sold to people with less than stellar credit that wanted a new car, but the new car dealers would not finance.

You may be waiting a long time. There's new tech in the oil industry and there's also the melting arctic circle with enough oil to last us for quite a bit of time. Maybe your kid's kids may see that wave. So it's not all doom and gloom.

No, not even close. We also have both, and while the 4R is more than capable of long hauls (we've done several; the Odyssey without roof rails holds less fully loaded) it's tediously painful in town. That's where the ease of the minivan shows its prowess over the 4R. I don't see how it's even a conversation.

Sorry, but a minivan and a midsize SUV are definitely cross-shopped vehicles for a lot families.

You're also categorically wrong in saying minivans are rapid compared to the 4runner. I believe the 2018 Honda Odyssey is 0-60 in 6.9 or so, and the 4runner is 7.5 or so. So, pretty similar unless you're flooring it. Also hardly painful in town. Funny how many 3rd gen 4runner owners are still happily enjoying their SUVs, which do 0-60 in probably ~10 seconds.

Both hold a ton of stuff. If your family is 6+, I can see the minivan being a point, but you should look at statistics of how common families that big are. Further, if you've lifted or modded your 4runner to further differentiate it from a minivan, you should also still realize many other folks don't do that.:ybrick:

Im looking at a 2015 4runner trd pro, in white w/ 30k miles for $35k. To me it seems like a good deal. Its a one owner, and has all oil changes and about $10k cheaper than a new one. Or I could get a new trd premium for like $38kish, but I like the pro. its pretty much just good to go. is the trd pro price ok?

Agree with this, but I don't count a 4Runner in the typical midsize SUV category because it's not built to the same standard (ease of use) as most midsize SUVs. Still, these are generally useful if your family is 4 or fewer.

I think that was someone else who argued this with you, however the Odyssey is great at highway speeds, which is how they're built.

5 is the tipping point, or 4 if your kids have friends/cousins that you transport on a regular basis. In fact, I would argue that the Odyssey is terrible at holding stuff (unless you pull out all the seats and go to IKEA, as we've done), but excels at holding people, which is the point. The 4Runner is capable of holding people, especially if they don't want to move for hours at a time, but the Odyssey is so super for in-town human travel I don't even understand the argument in favor of the 4R.

I have no dog in this hunt whatsoever, just color commentary.

The biggest reasons I'd not want a 4R as a 3rd row hauler are seldom mentioned:

#1. HVAC is really only adequate in the second row, the 3rd row must just plan suck. AKA whining kids.

#2. Safety. While it's probably not dangerous per se, it is an afterthought, engineering-wise. I'd not be comfortable putting my kiddos back there, especially on the highway.

#3. Suspension. I only have SR5s as experience, but 4 normal (eg large) adults cause the rear suspension to "notice" the difference, let alone with more crap in the back. I can't imagine adding 3rd row passengers not having a similar effect.

#1 better on long trips when you can normalize the heating/cooling, but terrible in city driving

#2 can't argue with this necessarily, but all vehicles are trade offs

#3 I've loaded it down with as much as I can fit (and there are pictures floating around here somewhere), and it handles fine on the road for long distances on stock XREAS (which is better than average on-road suspension), so I don't see any issue with this.

*the only alternatives I can see are your typical SUVs, Suburbans, or I have one friend with a Ford truck (from his office) with a bench front seat, the only way I'm aware to get 6 seatbelts in a truck
