5th Gen solid axle swap

Throw in a 2" long travel front and I think you got a very capable overlanding, crawling, desert blasting rig.

And yes Phil's rig is amazing.

That's the goal, eventually mine will get a Long Travel kit to go with the 35's. I think at that point while it's not a super great crawler, it's a pretty damn good "jack of all trades."

The guy on 120 is selling the same kit I have. Slightly used, read only a couple hundred miles.

For how much.... Link?

I agree the 5th gen is a good jack of all trades master of none... SAS seems like a bit of a waste on such a bulky body.

Even as my truck sits today it can keep up with just about everything with a similar tire... Has surprised the shit out of many a JK. LOL

The tone ring can be removed (carefully!) from the bearing assembly and then utlized in a different hub assembly... Say a FF unit.

Nope.....it's not like the old tacomas or rear axles, the sensor is not reading a tone ring.

Yes, it is the newer magnetic type, but it can still be removed and swapped. If we could find the manufacturer of the ring, that would be even better. The complete stock unit bearing could also be employed.

What Tone Ring are you talking about?

The rear Axles on 4th & 5th gens do not have traditional Tone Rings like 3rd gen 4Runners and 1st gen Tacomas did. They use the more modern set-up where the tone ring is internal to the wheel bearing itself (used also in the front assemblies and on most modern Toyotas after about '05-ish), trying to re-use them doesn't work well as removing the bearing usually damages the tone ring and side seal on them.

I realize it doesn't look like it, but they pop out just fine. This one is from a Tundra, there's no seal lip on it, the bearing retains grease through the seals on the housings... Or more appropriatly, keeps the bad stuff out.

Find a way to make an outer C or knuckle that will accept/mount the unit bearing and speed sensor.

How did you remove it from inside the bearing?

You are looking directly at the ring when viewing the bearing from the back side, it looks like the seal. It is not inside the bearing.
