5th gen suspension

BUMP... I'm curious. I found a set of struts and springs off of a 2013 Trail. Would love to know if I should pick them up.

Thanks,
Jeff

Has anyone tried to use the 5th gen rear coils on their 4th gen? What were the positives and negatives?

I'm curious to know too--I just got my hands on a full set from a dealer take off from what I assume was a 2017 SR5 (minus the rear coils) and got a set of rear coils from a forum member with a 2013 SR5. Will be putting them on a 2004 SR5 V8 maybe this weekend and will report back on how it goes, process, results, etc.

In the case of the 4th and 5th Generation 4Runners they are actually built on the exact same frame with little changes in between generations in terms of suspension and drivetrain components.

The 5th Generations KDSS system is just a re-valved and repainted version of the original XREAS System offered in the 4th gens, the suspension system is still the same components as they did not change anything really drastically frame wise.

The Trail Edition Suspension swap may be a little more difficult because off the KDSS system and IIRC (I haven't actually seen it yet...) the brouchure mentions something about disconnecting sway bar links option.

Honestly though, I wouldn't put the money into swapping a 5th gen suspension in, its roughly the same components but will most likely cost more because of the vehicle being newer.

Do you happen to know if there is a difference between the driver side and passenger side strut assemblies/coil spring rates? And if so, how to tell the difference? I picked up a full set of dealer take offs presumably from a 2016 or 2017 and seemed to remember hearing the driver side was a higher spring rate to offset the drivers side lean?

Strut assemblies might be the same, I can't recall. But the springs are different left to right, I forget what the coil rate/colours are to differentiate them though.

Success!

Just got my suspension swapped out and it all went fine. The lower mounts have to be pried open a bit to accommodate the bigger bushing, or grind the bushing down about 2mm--I did a bit of both. The rears needed the hole in the top mount of the frame reamed out a bit to fit the slightly bigger bumper, and the springs went in just fine.
I have the V8, and this seems to have given me a bit over an inch lift all around. I don't notice a drivers side lean either.

What color springs did you put on each front side?

Plan on swapping mine here in the next week or two.

Hey duder, might quote me in your response so I receive notice that you responded to me--otherwise you're relying on me checking on the thread on a whim!
I bought my setup as it came from a dealer take off, so my fronts were fully assembled--colors on the coils were the same...literally nothing to differentiate the driver/pass side. You have to look at the strut mount on the frame itself to figure it out. If you look closely the mount on the chassis has a slight slant toward the center of the chassis, you need to match that angle. In my case, the end of the coil wrap faced the rear on the driver side, the passenger side faced the front. I don't know if they should be opposites like that but after a few beers I convinced myself it didn't really matter!

Thanks. Mine have different colors. Pretty certain orange white, has one more coil, is the passenger side. Was hoping yours were similar. I will have to do the same, have a beer or two and just swap them.

Sorry to bump an old thread but there is an equal amount of those who say the 5th Gen will and will not fit a 4th Gen. Just looking for some replies from those who have completed the swap. I have an opportunity to buy a complete OEM 5th Gen suspension. My 2003 limited V8 is seriously sagging, leaking and needs replacement. Thanks in advance.

I just did it this weekend with some 2019 5th gen suspension in the front and rear its pretty straight forward once you know what to do.

Rear upper shock mount hole, might have to be reamed out with a circular drill bit from harbor freight to fit the bushings and nuts, springs In the rear are fine.

The front bushing of the new strut might have to shave down, either a belt sander, or in my case I used a dremel to fit it into the lower control arm seat portion. the upper area bolts up fine and the UCA are plug and play as well.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I have read every forum post and was worried. How does it handle in comparison to the old set up?
