5th Gen Trade in Values....

So every once and awhile I like to troll dealerships to see just how far I can push a deal. When we were looking at trading in our 2010 Limited I had a local Chrysler (went to check out the Ecodiesel) offer 29k. Best part was my wife was in Colorado at the time, so this was unseen. They wanted me to do the paperwork on the spot.

Fast forward to this weekend. Had a local dealer offer me 34K for my SR5 Premium w/ 3rd row. Wife is doing some schedule maintenance on her Outback Monday and after I take her to pick it up, I'm going to see what they'll offer. If it's higher than what the Toyota dealer offered, going to see if they'll match or go higher. I doubt it, in my past Toyota has been relatively inflexible when it comes to prices. I had to work for the 34K. This is all based on my 2015 with less than 8k miles.

What about you guys?

Caveat emptor

Just make sure that great trade-in value is not coupled with MSRP pricing, dealer add-ons, financing fees, and the like. Figure out what the fair cash price is for the vehicle you really want, and only then factor in trade-in dollars.

I think $34k for an SR5 Premium is a pretty good offer. You're always going to get hit hard by the dealership's offer. If I was already set on a new truck I'd probably accept that. With 8k miles and it being a 2015 though... no way I'd trade it in. I've had my 4runner for just over one year and I'm in no rush to get rid of it. If I took my trail in to get appraised right now I doubt I'd get more than $35k offered if I even get that much. I paid just about $40k a year ago and I have 19k miles on it. I'm gonna drive it for a few more years at least.

If you trade your Toyota in on a Chrysler product, you'll get to experience residual value on the other side of the spectrum. Then the dealers will be trolling you.

The trade-in number by itself doesn't mean anything. They could offer you $50k for it and just roll the cost into your new ride. The out the door cost of the whole transaction is the only number that matters. You will need to spend hours trolling each dealership to get that number.

So you're saying that he needs to step up his troll game? I thought it was already on high:plane:

Yep. A cash offer is the only meaningful trade in value. I pretty much only work with one dealership due to affiliation. But they are a non negotiation dealer. Cash offer - take or leave whether you buy or not. Sales prices are fixed too.

I think this is going to be Toyota's model soon. Lexus is testing the same model with the intent to roll it out as a requirement for all dealers on new and used cars and I think Toyota will follow.

This would be great, but I will believe it when I see it. They would lose out on a lot of money from unprepared buyers if they can't monkey with the numbers.

We can only hope. That was the one good thing about scion that needs to stay alive.

Maybe. I think the Lexus sales will be very compelling. The surveys show that people are more upset about paying more than someone else than they are about paying more. And everyone hates the dealership experience. If the price is the same no matter where you go, I think it'll cut costs dramatically for dealers as well. No more teams of salesmen. No more sales manager.

The only number that matters is the difference. Not trade in, not out the door, the difference between the two is what you will pay.
