5th Gen with Magnuson SC in Austin, TX????

Hey hoping to find someone close by who has done the SC thing. I had a 2016 TEP for a while and now am on the fence on whether I should get another 5th gen 4Runner or a used 200 series LC. If I go 4Runner, I really think I'll prioritize putting a supercharger on it, but would love to experience it first hand before making a decision.

Love my Magnuson, that said, if you plan to go that way, check with Magnuson to see if they have cracked a "tune" for the '20+ 'Runners.

When I win a lottery, I'm gettin' me a Cruiser to compliment my 'Runner in the garage. The Cruiser would be my "Sunday Go To Meetin" rig. The 'Runner is my daily driver and does just fine in the snow, which can get quite deep in Central Oregon.

If you're shopping a LC200, then I wouldn't bother with the SC on the 5th Gen. They make it peppier, but it's no V8 plain and simple. They have a bit more power when you lean into the gas, but it's still a stock Toyota 1GR-FE under the hood; you'd probably have to modify the engine itself to tune more power out of it without breaking things. Magnuson's stock boost table for them gives it something like up to 28% more torque at the crank on a stock truck. So you go from 278ft.lbs to possibly 355ft.lbs; again at the crank; so maybe 330-ish at the wheels?

We've done a couple 5th gens at the dealership with Magnuson SC and they are a little more peppy, but is it worth the $6k or so in parts plus labor? I'm not entirely sure to be honest with you having been considering a 5th gen recently myself. But if you're comparing a SC'd 4.0L V6 against the 5.7L V8; you'll probably be disappointed with the SC'd V6.

IF you're more concerned about having the power on tap I'd go with an LC200 the 5.7L 3UR-FE is a good strong V8 for your needs in that regard AND you can still supercharge that if it's not enough stock. Any particular need for the extra oomph?

Thanks for the feedback. I was afraid of some of the suggestions...i read similar posts on ih8mud and expected the answers given its mainly a LC forum. I figured if I got the same answers here, I should prob pay attention.

1. I travel from Austin to rural TX a fair amount and feels like the 4.0 struggles to hold 80 mph on I-10, especially through the hills. Fewer gear dropdowns would be nice

2. My fam and I travel to CO most summers. 2 kids, wife and 2 large dogs. Our primary travel mobile is a 4x4 sprinter, but like having something like the 4runner to drive shelf roads or go tent camping in. Even without the whole family in tow, it struggles at altitude on the mtn passes.

I really liked my 4runner before, but felt like if it had a little more oomph, it'd be even better. That said, I have driven a LC200 and it is a different animal. It's so smooth and quiet. It'd be perfect for long road trips, but I worry about how willing I will be to use it like i would the T4R. Wet dogs in the back, 4x4 shelf roads, etc. When we had the 4runner before, it really got used.

I'm also an over-analyzer, so I probably just need to make a decision and enjoy the places it lets me go.

I'd look at some of the built up LC200's out there. You can get a lot of the same mods you can for a 4Runner to help it weather kids and dogs on the inside and weather just about what the earth can throw at you on the outside.

Unfortunately both vehicles are going for premiums on the used market, Toyota Tax plus the impending next gen 4Runner around the corner and the recently axed Land Cruiser will make them pricey.

It does sound like you'd probably be better served by the LC200 with mods; but if you're just looking for a little more oomph then the SC might not be bad either.

The supercharger does make the 4Runner a little more peppier. The one thing I really like about it is the highway driving. It will hold 5th gear going up very steep grades. In town it has a little bit more pep. Biggest difference to me is the highway. Plenty of passing power and if you drop it down to 4th it will pull pretty hard. Is it worth $6k? Probably not but to each their own. I really enjoy mine. In the end it’s still a 5,000 lb. brick.

For anyone curious, I snagged a 2014 LC200 last week and am enjoying it so far. Its obviously bigger than the T4R but the 3UR is so nice on the highway.

I mean our dealer has thrown a few SCs on 2020's and my shop foreman is installing a Magnuson on a 2021. I don't know if it's specifically for the 2020~2021 though; but we haven't had any issues with the 4Runner tunes yet (we did have some weirdness with the 2020~2021 Tundra that Magnuson had to send someone out for last year IIRC.) I'll ask tomorrow and see if we have any documentation.

Edit- My mistake on Magnuson sending someone out, it was UniChip since we used them for a short while and had some issues.

As of last week, their reply was "not yet".

I don't know if it's specifically for the 2020~2021 though; but we haven't had any issues with the 4Runner tunes yet (we did have some weirdness with the 2020~2021 Tundra that Magnuson had to send someone out for last year IIRC.) I'll ask tomorrow and see if we have any documentation.

Where is your facility located ... just in case? My Magnuson was installed new by Kendall Toyota of Bend.
