5vzfe sounds like diesel. HELP!

I installed new heads on my 3.4l and now the engine makes a tapping noise. somethings definitely going on in the valvetrain. all valve clearances are within spec. I watched a youtube clip and it said something about the scissor gear. can someone shed some light.

my friend'd 96 sounds same, like a ford f-350 super duty. but drives perfectly, run deserts, muds, climb rocks....

When you installed the cams did you set valve lash?

If not, get an FSM and look it up. its somewhat complicated to explain without a picture but one of the cam has a splits gear with a spring in it.

The cam lash will do it, but if there are bad seats in any of the valves that will also cause the noise. It is most likely not just too much valve clearance from shim wear. My experience says the noise is a result of too much valve clearance from another issue.

My 99 had this noise and was joked about all the time...ran fine, good MPG I just got tired of the noise. So when I was doing the VC gasket I measured the shim clearance and sure enough two exhaust valves were way out of spec, so much so that shims would not make up the difference. Turns out the seats were bad.

got it fixed. the camshaft sub-gear wasn't aligned.

Heck I would of just enjoyed the sound of the Diesel make all my friend wish they had one to.
