60K service essentials

Going to the dealer to take my 2015 TRD pro in for the 60K mile service. All of my services are up to date. I just want to know what are the essentials. I know the dealer is going to try to upsell me on a lot of things.

IMO, do all the required plus whatever else you can afford UNLESS YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF, which is always better. Good time to change both diff fluids and transfer case fluid. It only gets more expensive and the oil is only getting older. It may not need it, but it can only help if you plan on putting 300k miles on it. Also, make sure that your Ujoints are getting properly greased! Extra maintenance never a bad thing.

T case and both diffs, grease driveshafts, oil change if it's needed. Save a ton here if you can do that yourself. None of them is hard.

I would do cabin air filter and engine air filter too, but you can do these both yourself in like 20 mins with almost no tools even -- for somewhere around $30 in parts by buying them from rockauto and googling how to do it. The dealer would likely charge you over a hundred bucks between the 2 of them.

Trans fluid wouldn't be a bad idea either, my dealer only charges about $100 for a drain and fill so I just have them do it every 50k or so. It's one of the only things mine ever goes in for other than recalls.

I'd probably do the serpentine belt too, but that's just me, I change them every 30-40k ish. That's again, something you can do yourself pretty easy if you have basic mechanical knowhow.

Go to the dealer with this laundry list and it'll be over a grand, easy. Maybe even 2 grand. Do it yourself and you are out only like $250 and a few hours.

Agreed on everything here. Trans fluid I think per the manual is at around 75k. But definitely both diffs, transfer case, and grease both drive shafts. Not sure if the serpentine belt is really a necessity at 60k though.

If you haven't done the cabin filter, it is super doooper easy on the 4Runner. Empty out the glove box, pull down a small plastic door held in place with plastic tabs, remove and insert new one, close plastic door. Don't pay for that for sure. Same with engine air filter.

How long would you say they last? 60k is usually averaging 5 years or so. And I wouldnt give a belt any more than 50k anyway, unless it was a 100k timing belt. I'd really prefer to not be 10 hours from home and lose cooling, power steering, alternator, etc. I never really will because I also always carry a spare. But I'd really rather not have to make repairs while on work trips and dressed nicely, plus on a time schedule. The nice thing about replacing it a little early is that you keep the old one. Bingo, there is your spare. Just in case. It will get you home at least. Will it break at 60k? Probably not. I've never heard of any guy who knows cars leaving a serp belt for like 100k though. It's not worth it, what is it, $20 and 30 min? Haven't done mine in a little while so I don't even remember what they cost exactly. I do remember it being slightly more of a pain to change than my other vehicles, but man that one belt runs like everything. Keep it fairly fresh.

The serpentine belt is good for 100k and it won’t fall apart, even if you go over by a couple of thousand miles. I’m sure most guys that you know who know cars probably worked on them old Chevy 350s.

Send me your used belts please

I guess I should be looking at owners manuals to see what this service entails. I'm looking for a 5th gen right now and have zero exposure to one mechanically.

On a side note, I've only had a serpentine belt fail once on any vehicle I've had, and that was because I was a dumb teenager and went off roading in my truck one time and went through a bunch of mud. Didn't clean it off real well, and it eventually causes the bearings in the idler pulley to fail and it actually stuck.

100k, interesting. Yes I'm old school.

Not to start a serp belt pissing match, but I usually see signs of wear that I don't like to see long before then. Sometimes you hear them too. The wife's car usually only gets about 25k before it starts getting noisy but then again it's a notorious belt eater by nature. It's not a 4Runner so that's irrelevant here anyway.
