65 mph vibration a typical 4Runner problem?

Little update: spoke to a service writer at the dealer that balanced my tires. Turns out they use a Hunter. I asked if they road-force balanced my wheels/tires and he replied, no, that's the next step (if regular ol' balancing doesn't do the trick).

Some of the Discounts machines havent been calibrated in a long time, others have. You have to tell the guy they have to use the adapter.
Had a nightmare at the Discount near me, brought it in 9 times, finally took to the Pacific Beach shop and I have never had a problem. :party:
 
Front End Vibration

I purchased a 2016 Trail Edition and as soon as I hit the highway to drive it home from the dealership, it vibrated between 50 - 60 mph and only between that range. Higher or lower speeds and the problem went away. I called dealer right away on my way home and was told to "give it some time..maybe tire has a flat spot in it".
Very aggravating to experience this on a brand new vehicle !
Since then I had another dealer install a 2" leveling kit

Well..since I altered the suspension I am on my own now. Dealer where I purchased it won't touch it now.

The vibration has not been any worse (3500 miles on it now) but very aggravating for sure!!
 
I've taken my car a total of 5 times between two different dealerships to try to get two sets of brand new tires balanced. Only one out of five times did I not get vibration. On the last set(dunflops) after giving the dealer two tries, I finally took it to discount tire and paid them 30 dollars. Perfectly balanced in 15 minutes. They found one tire was out 1/2 oz. So it's not the tire, it's the dealer imo.

the leveling kit shouldnt void the warranty. especially if another dealer installed it. my dad bought a 2012 trail in February of 2013, lifted it and put 285/70r17's and light racing UCAS and a hidden winch, the purchasing dealer still honors the extended service warranty. Hell i take my runner into a couple dealers here from time to time when im lazy or something and they dont hesitate.

Wobble

I bought a 2011 2wd SR5 in December and noticed the wobble at about 60mph pretty soon after, although it doesn't always happen. I test drove four different SR5's from four different dealers and all had the same wobble at about the same speed. Different tires on each one too, and some of them had new tires. I also have a wobble on initial take off in first gear too. I don't suppose that has anything to do with it?
 
Enkei 20 wheels

I have a 2006 4runner with the enkei 20 wheels. I can't figure out why I can't balance these wheels (I work at a huge dealership in west palm beach) so I had 3 technicians balance the wheels. Now I've been on these forums reading about hub centric and lug centric I would really need to know if my wheels are lug centric or not? I'm guessing that's my main issue why I can't get them balanced correctly since we have been using the cone

Unless you have the lug adapter for the balance machine the wheels will never be balanced. I have seen dealer techs trying to balance customer tires for 3 hours and they kept getting the "excessive road force" error on the machine from not having the lug adapter.
 
Out of 5 attempts toyota dealerships were only able to balance new tires correctly 1 time for me. 20% Success.

I am 2 for 2 at discount tire. 100% success. They balance them once and I don't have to touch them again for the rest of the tires life. Steering wheel is super steady.

My 07 4Runner SR5 with Duratracs drives amazing at any speed and it rides smoother than an of the Michelins that were on it... All year round now 3yrs running my Duratracs now without any issues, they even still look new and are simply outstanding! Over 2 ft of snow ain't chit for them! :dancin:

My Tundra is vibrating at 55 up so I am here :sadwave:
 
I want to thank everybody who posted their findings on this problem, my '07 has had an intermittent shake at 65-70mph since I had new Michelins mounted. 3 trips back to Sears for rebalancing with no improvement.

I located a shop with a Hunter Road Force Elite balancer here: https://www.hunter.com/gsp9700

The machine is impressive, lasers measuring the rim & tire while spinning and a big roller drum that rides on the tire. It directed the guy to break down one rim/tire and rotate the tire to a different location on the rim, then remount and balance. Also found balancing errors on 2 others. Shake is gone!

I didn't see if they used a Haweka or other lug-centric adapter, looked like he was just using the hub...but a good outcome nonetheless.
 
I'm the original 04 Limited owner and occasionally it will vibrate around 60 or 65 and then goes away when you up the speed. It was like that from day one. I hardly ever notice it anymore. Once in a while it happens and goes away. I'm certainly no expert but sounds like it may not always be a balancing issue.

Sometimes it can be the road, or dirt on your tires, rocks in the tread, or even radial tires can flat spot a little. If it's anything more than slight, the tires could be slightly out of balance, 1/4 oz off may do it, which is prob within a lot of tire shops margin of error. One tire of mine was 1/2 oz off and it was pretty bad.
 
Update on typical vibration issues

Maybe this is purely coincidental, but after going through 2 sets of Bridgestone tires, I decided to try out Michelin tires. The periodic vibration at around 65 mph never happened again. That’s incredible that for 16 years I experienced periodic vibration in the steering wheel and after I replaced with Michelin tires in 2020, it never happened again, no vibration in steering wheel at any speed. My 4 runner never rode so smooth especially at higher speeds. Even at 90 mph on the highway, rides as smooth as glass IMO. I used to hold the steering wheel for dear life at speeds in excess of 65 mph. Not anymore. Will stick with Michelin coincidental or not. Love my 4 Runner more than ever!
 
I think this is more of a Toyota issue. My sister has an FJ and it does the same thing. She took it to get looked at and they quoted her something pretty crazy. She decided the vibrating was that big of a deal. lol
