I have read rumors that it will be "joint" vehicle with BWM. Not kidding. But reverse of the Supra. BMW will sell a re-branded Land Cruiser because BMW has no meaninful presence in the off road capable market. And they want a vehicle for eastern Europe and the middle east. So they'd like a re-branded Land Cruiser. I could actually see this happening.
Seems sensible for BMW to want to compete with MB and JLR in those markets.

Really hard to know. I think Toyota obviously "gets it" that there's no reason to make another highlander. Toyota already has a highlander that's practically identical to the 4Runner in size. So the crossover version already exists and already sells better than a 4Runner. The closer the two become, the less combined sales will be. Toyota also owns Subaru, so the outback fits that slot between the two. As does a Forester in some ways. So there's not a lot of room to go soft on a 4Runner. It seems more logical to me from a marketing perspective to just have a 4Runner and Land Cruiser as comparable products differentiated by size primarily. Basically Tacoma and Tundra. That's what I'd anticipate.

No way. If it's a Land Cruiser it needs to have a split tailgate. I'd rather have the flip up window and a rear tailgate. That's the one feature I love about Land Cruisers. Leave the roll down window to the 4Runner.

Agreed. I don't think they can make the 4Runner (much) more like the Highlander. How does the Sequoia fit in?

If - and I kinda doubt that it's actually accurate - but if the Land Cruiser is truly replaced with a 5 seat version only that's offroad oriented - then the Sequoia could still fit in pretty well as a full size "suburban" style full size 3 row SUV that's more street oriented. Kinda like how it is now.
If they really mean that the LC300 is going to be a 5 seat only - that could mean it's going to be a short wheel base. I don't know how that fits in with the 4Runner that is long enough for a 3rd row. Unless they mean they'll slap the Land Cruiser name on a shortened 4Runner like another FJ Cruiser, but that doesn't fit the shared tundra components part of the equation. The last 2 row Land Cruiser in the USA was the 60 series.

Long time LC owner here.
Own my first 4R since selling my 200. It was just too big. The 100 series was plenty big and honestly perfect.
Y’all need to go read on iH8mud about the 300. Last posts I saw were everyone concerned about the LC being given the Lexus LS’ hybrid drivetrain and that reliability out in the middle of nowhere. Zero talk about them making a more stripped down version for NA...
What we all wish for is the 70 series here in NA.
I wouldn’t worry about the 4Rs off-road prowess leaving. There’s no reason for Toyota to turn it into a highlander. They already have a highlander that sells well!
The 4R has always been like a “baby LC” and even though technology advances and we lose axles and other traditionalist off-road features, the ability to off-road with lots of reliability will remain for both models.

With 4R sales at 150k units and all of the tooling paid for years ago I wouldn’t make any significant changes. 4Runner is a cash cow for Toyota. It’s their market share to loose.
Since they look like they will do a complete redesign I hope they get it right. I cant tell you how many times I got into arguments with the marketing and sales clowns at Ford because I wanted features and they wanted “paint and tape”.

Same here. Sold my LC about 6 months ago and went back to a 4R/AG. The LC would of probably worked better for me if my kids were little and still at home and we were doing a lot of camping. They are expensive to own and operate!
Love my new 4R and most likely will keep it for a long time like my 97!

I did not know this. Is this a somewhat recent acquisition?
This would be one of my concerns. I guess some places are more forgiving to wide bodies than others, but my 4Runner already has some significant pinstriping from the trails I've run. If I was in something LC wide, I wouldn't have any mirrors left.

I don't think they own Subaru, just a portion of them (a little under 20%). Happened a few years ago.

Toyota has owned a significant share of Subaru since GM sold it in its bankruptcy. GM and Subaru never really did much together though. Toyota recently purchased a larger stake in Subaru and now Subaru is I guess "officially" a sub-brand of the Toyota group. The press releases suggest that you won't see the subaru dealerships morph into Toyota dealers any time soon. And product mix will remain kinda similar to what it is now - but I expect within the next decade most if not all subaru models will eventually become TNGA based and use toyota EV or hybrid drive trains.

Toyota owns a big chunk of Mazda and they have a big investment in Tesla. I worked on electrical systems that went into Toyotas and Teslas. Same part different shipping address.
