6th Gen or Lexus GX550?

Hi folks,

It was a difficult decision...wait for the 6th gen, or wait for the Lexus GX550 Overtrail (they were available if you wanted to pay an extra 5/10K over sticker...and I wasn't!) I worked with a dealer that flubbed up my first deal, so they found another one (took almost 3 months) but they matched the first truck price so basically I ended up getting my roof rack for free.

I wonder if other people feel the same....it seems like we've been waiting 6th gen for 3 years and basically, I feel kinda of left behind. I realize the 5th gen was a super platform (between my.. 2 trucks close to 300K miles...absolutely ZERO complaints!!).

When I first saw the Overtrail, I became anamured for the first time since 2010. It has some great driving systems, eKDSS, Torson center lock(still don't understand that) and host of other goodies that make Lexus a great vehicle.

I know it's not for everyone...but I would say if you're close and can't make a choice...go sit in one and drive it...I think you'll be really impressed and pleasantly surprised.

This has been my conclusion for awhile too. I've been in a holding pattern watching GX550 inventory come in (which is pretty much non-existent in Arizona with dealerships still sitting on wait lists from what I've heard). I think it's the more compellling vehicle versus a 6th Gen 4Runner or Land Cruiser due to the power train.

I drove the Land Cruiser and did not care for the hybrid at all. Yes, it had a lot o grunt below about 40 mph due to the instant-on electric torque, but it really seemed to kind of run out of steam accelerating to freeway speeds.

Long story short; I haven't done anything yet. Been playing with the idea of getting a Jeep Wrangler or a Ford Bronco Raptor, but haven't found a "perfect" option yet either...

For the wife and I, me being 79 and her a couple years younger and I'm driving a new 2024 4 Runner and her a 2021 Lexus RX 350. Our yearly driving mileage is somewhere around 6-7 thousand miles per year per vehicle and we have been trading vehicles around every 5 years. I feel we are setup in two vehicles that will probably do us for a long time, or at least for our time if you know what I mean. We have what many would call, "old style vehicles", V6's with gas engines, no hybrids, or 4 cylinder engines. Now that it seems like everything has changed with Toyota and Lexus and it's pretty much in their powertrains and I will have a hard time going from old school to whatever they call this new school vehicle, I personally don't care for the hybrids and 4 cylinder engines of the new vehicles. I guess if we want a new vehicle in the future we will have to change our thinking, or just keep what we got, and that probably won't be that bad. I will say since her Lexus will be the next vehicle to be replace, she has her eye on the GX550, I do to.

Im sorry to hear Lexus' are not more prevalent. My primary driver was the fact I just couldn't fall in love with the 4cylinder (Landcruiser was out for the most part, although they do have some advantages over the GX550 in other areas). I was pleasantly surprised with the comfort, and right now I'm sitting at 20 mpg (eco mode) which is a huge improvement of 14 mpg with my 4runner. I'm a little worried about Jeep...and the Bronco's up here are lining the lots. Which ever way you go...please swing back!... best of luck!

I hear that...I'm 67 wondering if I made the right move and should've stuck with the bullet proof engine and drive train of 24 4runner...only time is going will tell. It's an unfortunate time in the new car market, but after owning this for over 2 weeks, in my heart of hearts I feel it was the right choice.

I'd go Land Cruiser 250. Has the boxyness of a 5th gen, the full-time 4WD and rear locker of a GX550 Overtrail, but at a much lower price point, with a powertrain I like. I'm in favor of modern technology (like the turbo hybrid 4cyl).... but I just irrationally do not want a 10-speed transmission.

I think you made a good choice. The features and capabilities in that package are much better than the 6th gen. Though the 5th gen seems bulletproof and I am very happy with it.

I don't see myself getting rid of mine ever, but it is also only a bad weather/outdoor activity vehicle for me so it doesn't see many miles. Given current toyota offerings I would have chosen the same as you or the Sequoia/Tundra TRD Pro for the drivetrain.

One other thing I would like to add from my earlier post, I try to buy my new vehicles when dealers have them on their lots and they have many to choose from. Now, todays Toyota and Lexus dealers are in short supply of these popular models and if buying today you will probably have to pay more and your choice of vehicle will be much less. For the wife and I we have such low mileage vehicles when we trade it becomes a trade of just a want for something new and not the need for a new vehicle because of mileage of mechanical issues. Many buy because of the updated electronic features on the new vehicles, I do admit I like some of them, but I have never traded just for the electronic upgrades, more so for vehicle design and looks. So for me until dealer lots have vehicles to sell and I mean 15-20 of the model I might want to buy, my wife will just have to drive her 2021 RX 350 with 20,000 miles on it. Life can be stressful.

I'm leaning toward the GX550 but I'm waiting for a few more to be on the dealer lot locally. I also want to see the new LX700 Overtrail, but that's a bit beyond what I'm willing to pay for a vehicle. The only thing I don't like about the GX550 is that it's 5 inches longer than the 4Runner. I'm sure it isn't noticeable, but that's pretty much my only objection. Enjoy your ride!

The GX550 is 2" longer than a 2025 4Runner, but about 6-7" longer than a 2024 4Runner. Unfortunately all this new-gen stuff continued the quest of getting pointlessly longer.

Apparently the very samey Land Cruiser 250 is just over 3" shorter than the GX550.

We are looking at the Prem+ versus the Limited/Platinum for the 4Runner. The vehicle will be an outdoor/road tripper/tow vehicle for our whitewater rafts. The 4Runner is compelling with the $5-8k lower MSRP, bigger tank, and better MPG, and I believe it does not need premium. The GX550 should be more fun to drive and possibly better offroad. I am currently torn on whether we need a third row, which, besides availability, is probably the final decision point. The trailer comes in about 3500lbs fully loaded but that gets driven in some really remote parts of Idaho and Canada over mountain passes, so want something that won't struggle with the weight at all.

I'm not sure which GX could be better offroad than the 6G 4Runner. Even a $$ GX Overtrail I would expect to be marginally worse offroad than a TRD Offroad level 4Runner.

A third row is offered in the 4Runner if you're willing to skip the hybrid.

If you REALLY demand a rev-free towing experience, I suppose the GX could win out for that reason. That said, a 3500 lb relatively aerodynamic trailer is well below the new 4Runner's 6000 lb capacity, and I wouldn't expect it to do poorly. I'm also the kind of guy who is willing to just go slower if stuff is struggling, though.

Just look at all the new buyers who paid over list for new vehicles a few years ago, most are still upside down and can't trade out of their vehicles. I purchased a new 2024 4 Runner last January 2024 and the $54,000 list price was discounted by the dealer to $51,000. The dealer had 22 4 Runners in stock at that time and for some reason they discounted them, a month later the dealer was down to 8 on the lot, go figure and the price was back to list price.

Not sure. Saw 4Runner, LC, and GX550 at a car show. My wife really did not like the 4Runner front seats. She thought the LC and GX seats were better.

I'm trying to compare the numbers. The GX550 is over what we want to pay for a car, but I do like the idea of a 6 cylinder engine. The lower end LC may be a better value than the more expensive 4Runners.

Toyota seems to have really blurred the lines between these and the cost of a 4Runner as you move up features stack is not compelling to me.

We were positive our next car was going to be another 4Runner. We're now considering some non-Toyota options. Or maybe a used 2020-2024.

I would still suggest not knocking it until you try it. There is more to life than cylinder count. Namely, torque.

I've ridden in the new Toyota and Lexus vehicles with the new 4-cylinder turbos and yes there is a difference, but my reason for the V6 over the 4 Cylinder is not the engine performance it is the cost on down the line for repairs. Turbo cost on repairs today are much more expensive than say the base engines without turbos. If you watch the videos on YouTube "the car care nut" you can see what he says about turbos and their increase in price to work on and engine maintenace will cost more to the owner of said vehicles. All you have to do is open the hood and look at the engine, what a tangled mess of tubes and wires, a lot of labor to get to something.
