Maybe this has been discussed already, but will there be a "new" 4Runner coming out soon that is a dramatic departure from the 2010-current model?

Toyota realizes they are late to the game on the 6th gen and have decided to just go straight to the 7th gen.. blurry spy shots to follow...

Yes, Toyota has decided to take a page from Microsoft (windows 8 to windows 10) and instead of bringing out Generation 6, they are skipping to Lucky #7. So let the speculation on Generation 7 begin!

The price of fuel isn't going anywhere.
There's so much excess capability just waiting for oil to climb that will suppress pricing for decade(s). Australia is now coming on line as well with all the newer fracking technologies so yield out of massive oil formations in North America and Australia are a ceiling to OPEC manipulated pricing.
Why is this important?
Because it means that SUV sales and less than "eco" models continue to sell while econo isht boxes and sedans are suffering. Toyota is practically giving away sedans.
That means we're not going to see a MAJOR departure from the current power train.
Ford and GM joined in a new 10 speed venture which is part of these new efforts to comply with EPA incremental fleet averages.
I'd venture that Toyota wouldn't be far behind with an 8 or 10 (or 12) speed auto and new small engine, twin turbo or hybrid engines as the base/standard (like Ford's ecoboost+10R80 powertrain).
But that stuff has all been put on hold given the price of fuel.
Higher fuel prices would mean the 4Runner and Tacoma would HAVE to change drastically to stay in the segment. But with fuel prices depressed (outside of a major war or world calamity) there's little to no incentive for them to make any major modifications to the core of the 4R/Tacoma anytime soon. Especially with sales of gas guzzlers doing well.

I heard from a very reliable fake news source that because of the lasting popularity of the 4runner, and the need for more fuel efficient SUVs, Toyota is going with a sportier, lighter, and RETRO version with Matchbox doing the R+D as we speak!! Drive train will be contracted to a Swiss company and the Energizer Bunny will be providing the batteries. :madgrin:

Sequoia? Really?
They haven't sold more than 16k Sequoias a year since 2009. I'd figure they would go ahead and kill it off, can't be profitable to retool.

My friend just returned from the annual toyota meeting in Dallas and there is still no solid info regarding the future of the 4runner or Sequoia just that they will be updated. There are 3 new SUVs under development, 2 compact and 1 midsize.
