85 4runner shifter stuck in 4H please HELP!!!

hi. im having troubles with my 85 4runner. i was out in the mud playing. had it in 4l for a while and shifted it to 2h when i was on flat ground. then went to shift back to 4L and it got as far as 4H and will not move from there. only the rear wheels have drive to them?? any answers would be greatly appreciated. cheers

What did you exactly do?
You shifted from 2H to for 4L without going neutral first?
First go neutral and then shift to 2H, I hope it helps.

i was in 4l for a bit and shifted to 2wd when i was out of the mud. then got stuck and tried to put it back into 4l and it only got to 4h and stoped. normal gear box was in nuteral

The last time I ran my '87 in 4WD, I had a hell of a time shifting back to 2WD... I just pushed really, really hard on the shifter, and it popped out.

My 4WD hadn't been used in years, as the transmission I've got just came off a truck that was sitting for 5 years, and the hubs were bad on my truck until recently. I'm assuming that was my issue.

Try pressing really had on the shifter...

yeah i tried that and still no luck pushed as hard as my little arms would let me. lol. bloody thing

Did you just change your fluids. After changing aout all fluids in my 86 4runner I had a heck of a time getting it back to 2HI. It only did that twice and now it works just fine.
To get it back in i was moving foreward a bit and then it went in like butter.

try backing up a little like 10 feet at a time and then try to shift out!
