85 shifting problems

I just bought an 85 with automatic transmission. First and second gear seem fine, acceleration is okay, but when its shifts out of second it bogs down. The button to change from normal to power seems to work, at least it down shifts into second when in the power mode. It never seems to shift from third to overdrive. This and the bogging down makes me think it might be skipping third. Is this possilbe? If so whats the fix? Also it idles rough when cold and but idles high when warm.

I woud fix any issues with the engine (tune up, vacuum line checks, timing, idle speed etc.) before assuming that the problem is with the transmission. It very well could be the trans but a poorly running engine will have an effect on how well the auto transmission works.

If you think it's going from 2nd to OD, get under and disconnect the wire going to the OD Solenoid. It's on the outside of the trans, can't remember if drive or pass side. See what happens and report back.

I've replaced plugs, wires, rotor cap, fuel filter. I does seem the cold start injector is not functioning, I have not yet traced back to see if its the injector, it has fuel to it, or is the temp sensor or timing gizmo next to the temp sensor. Also I can not seem to locate overdrive wiring on the tranny in order to disconnect it. I have both paper and CD service manuals and don't see it there either.

Problem could also be with the throttle cable, governer, or valve body.
The OD wiring is on page AT-15+ of my 88 manual, what ones are you looking at?

Finally have good news to report. Had engine checked, low compression so rebuilt it, new head, header etc. 3rd still skiped to over drive. Checked the solinoids, all okay. Finally tracked to the check ball in the valve body for 3rd. apperently its seat gets warn and leaks as if its open, causes a shift to overdrive. Removed the ETC and had manual shift of third so I knew 3rd was okay. so I bought a rebuilt valve body and now its shifts 1,2,3 and overdrive as it should.
