86 runner soft brake peddel

I have an 86 4Runner with a 22RE, I just replaced the Brake MC and rear Wheel cylinders as well as the rear Shoes, well I can't seem to get a good firm peddle. I have bleed the system several times:cry2: with little improvement. I bench bleed the MC and bleed the brakes as follows, RR LR RF LF and then the LSPV. Need suggestions ASAP! I do want to replace the flex lines as I'm sure they are a bit tired, I do get fluid out of the bleed nipples. I've read countess stories of how other people bleed these brake systems as it seems like there might be a bit of black magic involved. I have bleed many of brake systems and none have kicked my but like this 4Runner system.

I changed front pads and rear shoes and bled the system. Braking was a little better. Some other work later on led to my hard line breaking since it was so old and brittle. So I replaced most of it. New fluid and Bled it again of course after that. Now I am amazed. The pedal is stiffer than my 4th gen.

Maybe the inside of the old lines get clogged up over time since the 80's and don't provide proper pedal feel if the fluid just trickles through.

Not an expert. Just recounting my experience.

Make sure the rear shoes are adjusted properly. Too loose and the pedal will be soft no matter how much you bleed them.

I replaced all the flex lines, and rebleed, brake peddle not any better, I just ordered a bush and seal kit for the LCPV, hopefully that helps.

youve heard it before but ill say it again. check your rear break adjustment. i had your brake problem on my 85 for quiet awile. i bled my ass off replaced wheel cyl. etc. it would be fine then a few days later pedal was soft again. one my 3rd time adjusten the rears for what ever reason i noticed i maxed out the adj and was still not tight (i was able to adjust the rear in the wrong direction). the fkn adjuster was worn out so it would click 1 way and bearley go the other way. i rebuildt the backingplate and all seems well. finally got my brakes working right and it feels good. our roads are steep and narrow around here. it sucked going up with a 22re and it sucked even worse coming down with a soft pedal. i will be doing the 6 cylinder rear end and brake swap soon though. our brakes are dangerous.:lookout::lookout:

rear brake adjustment normally affects pedal height more than pedal firmness. when you hit the brakes does the pedal seem to travel too far down or does it just feel spongey. like the others suggested check rear adjustment. get the rear wheels off the ground and adjust each brake until you feel some drag when turning the wheels. or you have a defective master cyl. I was a brake mechanic for a few years in the 80s and what these guys are telling you seems right on.
