87 4Runner issues

I recently acquired an 87 4runner from my buddy who needed to sell it because he was moving. It currently doesn't run, and needs a new rear cover/tailgate. When I try to start it, all I get is a loud thump, then nothing. The battery is brand new, so any advice would be thankful.

Also, any idea how much a rear cover and tailgate (need the glass too) would run me?

Hard tops go anywhere from free to a couple hundred dollars.
Complete, good tailgates are a little harder to find, could be a couple hundred also.

Start looking in the For Sale forums of local club sites, and Toyota sites like this one.

You are not alone dude. I know some guys have some problems too. Mostly they all complaining some start up problems on their runners.
