87 air intake modification?

Hello I'm looking into changing the factory air intake on my 87 4rnner. Im more interested improving fuel economy and maybe a little extra horsepower. Any suggestions? It seems that a lot of folks just go with a k&n air filter. What about cold air intake or is there something better? Please send a link or tell me where to look cause all I can find id the kn air filter.

there are limited options because of the big fat sensor in the air box... An after market cleaner is about the top of the mountain for us with the 22re configuration.

A couple of things you can do is a late model intake swap (upper plenum and throttle body) which will give you better throttle response. There is also 1 year of supra AFM that is compatible with the 22RE, it has a larger diameter inlet and outler, couple that with a K&N and you are sucking in lots more wind that you were.

You can swap in the air flow sensor from a tacoma. LCengineering sells the kits.

To put it together, I ordered this from 4WheelOffroad: airaid 100-300 - Google Search

Needed to tie it all together, so I bought a few of these: Amazon.com: Spectre 8771 Universal Coupler/Reducer Combo - Black: Automotive

Haven't actually used the Airaid and clamps yet. I actually used this for now just to make sure everything worked well: Amazon.com: Spectre 8741 Air Ducting 3' Black: Automotive

To tune it, I bought this: Square air fuel ratio gauge, velcro anywhere, size of a keychain remote. Air fuel ratio Gauges help tune the a/f of your engine. air fuel ratio tunning will make more power! - Square air fuel ratio gauge, velcro anywhere, size of a keychain remote

Guage works well, but I'm going to move my O2 sensor closer to the LCE header collector and run a heated O2 sensor instead. Got all the parts for all that already, just need to go to the exhaust shop to have the flange moved and welded back on (got a new flange and sensor from E-Bay). Right now it bounces alot unles under WOT (typical).

I made the initial adjustments only with the screw located on the top of the AFM, no other required.

Works like a charm. I mounted my AFM right on top of the bottom half of the stock airbox. Three goals, maintain stock configuration, easy to put back for smog, and fresh, cool air from the grill. All worked well.

this is what I have done to my 86 22re...

1- clean your intake and throttle body and get all that gunk out.
2- k & n intake
3- I change my MAF to a 82 supra MAF...ONLY that year (what a difference, better throttle response)
4- maybe an electric fan


in Hawaii we have no smog checks so I gutted all my egr / smog crap out.

I did half of this mod Customsnorkle routing a pipe below the wiper cowl. It drasticaly chainged the depth of water I could go through. As a bonus my mileage and performance increased. I was getting
27 mpg (cdn) with a 86 p/u 22re 5gear with 32'' tires. I wish I woulda takin' pix of the mod.
