88 info needed

Stuck my seats in and ran my 88 out a couple miles and through the gears. It wants to cut out a little at higher rpm and is slow. I unbolted the converter. It seems to be getting better. Here are my questions

Where is the best place to buy a radiator and get the most cooling for the money. I want to stay under 150. Advance and a local supplier are at about 110 for a replacement. Advance one lifetime replacement. Should I get my original soldered up for 60 bucks?

Where is the fuel filter?

Anyone have a link to purchase a bolt in pipe to replace the cat? How can I check mine? Should I replace Cat or eliminate? I am non emmission. Does the computer/vehicle run better with the cat?

If it's a 22RE, the fuel filter is hiding under the intake plenum, just above the starter. I'd have your existing radiator repaired and pressure tested before replacing it.

The cat makes a significant difference in the amount of emissions put out by the truck. Even if you aren't emission controlled, I'd run one anyway, just because it's not just you breathing the air around you and it's nice to be a good neighbor.

I agree with KV, get ur original radiator fixed. As for the fuel filter, there is an access panel located in the right front wheelwell that makes it easier to replace the fuel filter. Good luck!

Ok guys I will keep it catted. I got it off today and you can see the screen and light through it. Any ideas how to clean it?
I went ahead and bought the advance auto radiator and installed it. I will hang on to my original. Cleaned inside with brush and water with gain detergent. Cleaned carpet with degreaser, waiting for it to dry. Pulled the rubber plugs from the floor and all inside panels. And I have pics! Sorry about no before but found the camera and snapped today. Lubed up all my window tracks etc.

Someone broke the connect off this sensor? and plugged the hose with a rusty nail. Ideas on a fix or anyone have one on the cheap?

I approve of your use of slave labor. I can't wait for my slave labor to be old enough to detail my truck for me.

I'll have to see if I've got that vacuum switch kicking around my parts box. I'm betting you could get one at a yard cheaper than I could mail it though.

^ I agree! Slave labor is the best! I haven't done an oil change, tire rotation, wash n wax etc. in nearly 10 years... BTW are ur boys up to date on their tetanus shots? :D

Bad news on the home front. Installed radiator and drove out to the crossroads again. No power, exhaust pipes red hot (glowing) below manifold. Now knocking. I now realize I may have used a 84 chain on a 88 engine. So where should I go from here. I do not see oil and water mixed nor steam in the exhaust. The temp gauge seemed to work but I had bubbling and hot engine. If the chain was different could my timing have been so advanced to cause the hot problem? I also could have installed the catalytic converter backwards. I went shield up? May jump on a flipped 400 dollar one with running motor, swap and do my first 22r build. My slave labor is stoked and ready. I now realize the the 98 and 96 tooth chain situation exist. I had a chain for a 84 or 85 truck I used. Carburetored engine.

An '84 chain should have been too short? Regardless, I'm pretty sure timing is timing. If you got the crank and cam lined up correctly then there wouldn't be any advance. There also wouldn't be any slack at all on the uphill side, but that wouldn't cause overheating. And if your timing was messed up that bad, I'd think you'd hear the melodious rhythm of valves getting in fights with piston heads before you'd come close to overheating.

But I'm just spitballing, I'm no expert.

I am thinking I will snatch this engine out and go look at a rolled running one for 400 bucks. Put that engine in and ride. I want to rebuild my existing engine so now I am soliciting advice on a rebuild. I want fuel economy foremost and performance second. I am looking for a long term #1 rider and my off roading will not be regular. Looking at high 20's on the road and around 20 city. I live rural so not much stop and go for me unless I traverse to the city . I am seeing engbulder seems to be the man. I have a carbaretered 22r in a machine shop. Would it be a better fuel economy choice with a weber?
