'89 trans issues

Hi, I just bought my first 4-runner last night. It's an extremely clean 1989 SR5. It's got a 3.0. I'm somewhat familiar with Toyota's of this age. I've owned 4 MK3 Supra's. I need to change the knock sensor which isn't bad. The question I have is about the transmission. When starting from a stop, it has to be put into L and then once I'm over 10mph I can shift it into D and everything's fine. If you try to start from D, it just slips. I'm pretty sure it's a solenoid but from what I've read there are 3 in the trans. Does anybody have any idea which one it could be? I'd like to avoid replacing unneeded parts if possible. Thanks for any help.

From looking at the manual, if the first solenoid is not working, the 1st gear doesn't work in D. Search google for "4runner FSM" and you will find the factory service manual and the transmission service manual.

knock sen may have something to do with the performance as well

Yes, the Knock Sensor definitely is affecting the performance but it's not what's causing the trans issues. Both the solenoids and the KS are going to be fixed soon. I guess rather than trying to just change the bad solenoid I should just replace all of them while I'm in there.
