'90 project 4r

This is my first post around here. Hope to contribute to this place as I fix up and mod an awesome 4runner I just found.

1990 4runner, 5spd manual, 3.0L engine with only 75,000 original miles

Currently working on straightening out the panel in front of the skid plate that was folded under. Short list of things to do.

• Check with a dealer for headgasket and steering recall - nadda
• Replace ignition - on order
• Replace Air Filter - done
• Replace Oil and Filter - done
• Touch up running and cross bars - done
• Replace O2 sensor
• Running lights in front and rear do not work
• Pull tailgate apart and see if I can get the window to close better
• Polish oxidized light covers
• Scrape and paint a few areas underneath
• Pop a couple dents out
• Fix rocker panel
• Remove swingout spare holder and find undercarriage mount w/winch, possibly reroute exhaust

Not a whole lot of incredibly hard work, just a bunch of small things to start out which will give ample time for upgrades. Should be a fun summer project and I'll keep posted

Welcome to the forum. I am in the '90 club as well, and right now, my rig is laid up due to a failure to pass emissions (MAN I hate that!). I have to change the O2 sensor on mine this week. I've done everything else.

The rear window is so hit and miss - you can lube and clean everything, but you'll likely gain only a slightly noticeable increase in window speed. A friend of mine had a 90 4R rear window "re-wound" and it worked great.

Good luck with the project. This is the time to dream big and then boil down what really matters to you.

I've found the root of the window problem for this one atleast. About half way up on one side on the trim for the window slot there is a dent in the plastic that causes an increase in friction on the window as it gets past that point. I need to find a way to unbend it or find the piece of trim from a junk yard

Maybe just "coerce" it a bit with a small bit of dremel grinding.

Lockers

I am a 1994 4runner and I have been looking at lockers. I kind of want the air lockers so I can activate them when I want to, but all of them say compressor sold seperatly. What exactly does this mean? Any suggestions?

When you have a Q like that, its best to start your own thread rather than hi-jack some one elses.

Air lockers need compressed air to operate. You have to buy the compressors also.

The person I bought this from tried to wire in an aftermarket stereo and mp3 player. He did a hack job at it. Things are miswired all over the place. He cut out whatever plug was in the back of the OEM faceplate and twist/e-taped things together

The console he put in has the following, and I've found the equivalent

red 12v constant
yellow 12v ignition
black ground :: grounded
grey greyblack front R+/- :: blue and light green with double dash
white whiteblack front L+/- :: pink and violet with double dash
violet violetblack rear R+/-
green greenblack rear L+/-

what are the cable colors and marks of the rear R and rear L speakers along with the appropriate 12v source colors? or where could I find information regarding the wiring layout. Chilton book covers diagrams but not color coded cables, most of the guides on line deal with simply installing the faceplate and plugging the old plug back in

I found http://www.installdr.com/installdocs/toyota/PDF/869017.pdf but the colors for the factory wires are wrong

I've got a copy of the FSM as well

For the rear speakers it calls for white/red and black/yellow for R and L respectively. There are two sets of wires that are in a sheeth and they are white/red and white/black, are these the respective rear speaker wires? Aside from that there is a brown, white with green line, black with a red line, blue with a green line, and pink with gray line that I can't match up with anything on page 118 of the fsm

I'm not certain about your 90, but my 94 definitely does not have a Cabin Air Filter....unless it's hiding.

Got a ton of work done yesterday. Finished lengthening the rails of the roof rack, installed a new ignition, got the tailgate back on and the motor works well after pulling it apart, cleaning everything and relubing it, got the radio working and put the dash back together

fix one problem cause another. The sound system works too well now... there is clicking and interference in the rear speakers with the car completely turned off. It stops with the battery unplugged or when the battery dies. What is the best way to diagnose and fix an electrical drain?

have an under body carrier i removed for a rear gas tank and installed a swing out for bigger tires. where are u located could ship it u can have it

I went to a shop today and had my muffler rerouted around the spare tire and they cut the line for my shock that allows air adjustment. Got back home and noticed it leaking oil pretty bad. Went back, they fixed the flimsy plastic line but now I'm back home and realizing the rear end is a lot lower. I tried pumping it up but its not as high before. What is the max psi that the rear should hold? It has aftermarket shocks that don't have a name on them.

I am new to this forum and reside in Haiti. I recently acquired a 90 4R SR5 V6 5 speed. Not only am I new to this forum but also to vehicles of this type. I am an Old Muscle car era drag car builder, but that does not equip you for these vehicles.

The vehicle has many issues. In Haiti all vehicles have issues. Even brand new ones. Anyway...My attraction to this thread is related to tailgate. Someone has butchered all the wiring in the rear so nothing is connected to lower window. I am not even sure how this tailgate is supposed to operate. It appears window has to go down first and then something electrically releases latch mechanism.

I have purchased FSM and will have it brought to me the next time someone comes down, but in the mean time I am having to use the meager information available by aftermarket manuals.

I guess the long and short of my question is:

1. How are you supposed to open rear gate.
2. How do you open it in the event no electrical releases are in place.
3. as a side note, the mechanical connections to hand pull are not connected and I don't have the hand pull.

By the way I probably will run through more puddles on the way to the grocery store than most mudders do in a month. Roads are horrible here.
