9005 instead of 9006 -- any potential melting ?

An auto part store near me Does not recommend the switch to 9005 claiming it may melt the light housing. As I think of converting my fog bulbs to 9005, your advice here will make or break this idea. In a 2004 4runner limited, should I be worried of melting etc. If I change the bulb in the fog lights?

I don't think you should be worried, 03-05 has projector style fog lights. They made out of metal and have glass lense, a lot beefier than 06+ made of plastic.

Does it really worth the switch? 9005 have may be 10% increased performance compare to 9006 due to increased wattage. That is not something you can see with naked eye

You'll have no issues whatsoever. I swapped them in my 2004 4Runner about 3 years ago and haven't looked back since. BTW, the difference in lumens is 1000 vs 1700, so it is a good difference. The difference in actual wattage is negligible. You won't melt anything.

hmm, iteresting. But I imagine this only aplies to halogen bulbs? Dont think HID bulbs will show such a big difference.
