90k service Parts List

Im finally pulling the trigger on the 90k service + timing belt.

After all the "what parts should get changed", etc etc, here's the list:

GETTING REPLACED:
Timing Belt
Serpentine Belt
Water Pump w/ gasket
Thermostat w/ seal

GETTING CHECKED, REPLACED IF NECESSARY:
Left & Right Idler Pulleys
Tensioner
Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses

NO NEED TO REPLACE (according to Head Service guy):
Crankshaft Seal
Camshaft Seal
PCV Valve (was done at 60k maint.)

This is getting done next Thursday. Anyone see something i forgot? Something on the list (or not, for that matter) that DEF. SHOULD GET changed?

I read these thread and want to cry at the number of perfectly good water pumps that are going to the dump.

If you have never serviced your coolant then yes.. better be safe than sorry and ditch the water pump... BUT if you have replaced/Flushed your coolant every other year (like you are supposed to) then chances are that your water pump is just fine. The water pumps on the V8s are incredibly reliable little beasts..

If it brings you comfort... stick a new one in, but understand that you are probably not accomplishing anything other then lightening your wallet.

My dealer ONLY replaces the water pump if:
1) it is leaking
2) he has no record of any coolant servicing
3) it is on its second belt (i.e. 180,000 miles)
4) certain engines with known water pump issues.

He has been doing this for years now, on literally thousands of cars and trucks and has had ZERO water pump failures.

The attitude "well since you are there" is a little daft... Since you are there why not replace the crank pulley or the harmonic balance? or the Alternator?

If you read the maintenance schedule from Toyota USA..
There is NO mention of the water pump with the timing belt...

And 5.5 Hrs! WTF! my dealer did mine in 3 hrs! From the time I dropped it off till the time they called to arrange a pickup wasn't 5 hrs.

I respect your position on the water pump failure rate (or lack thereof), but my reasons are for more than piece of mind.

This is my wife's 4Runner that i gave to her when her crapbox died. I bought it at 16k miles, and has been dealer-maintained religiously. The 30k, 45k, 60k all done and recommended service was always followed. I want to prevent the possibility of it breaking down. Thats all.

Im accomplishing peace of mind for $100...not to mention the lack of a headache down the line somewhere.

If you think a dealer will install a new water pump for an additional $100 you are in for a disappointment. Most dealers list JUST the pump for $140... plus the gasket(s), plus 2 additional hours of book time, plus coolant, plus the thermostat, etc.

Adding water pump replacement will at least double (and can triple) the cost of a timing belt project.

My dealer did my timing belt, with OE parts, belt, tensioner, and idlers for $350 including tax.

If you can get a dealer do do the belt, thermostat, idlers, tensioner and the pump for $700 with OE parts out the door, you are doing very well.

Absolutely! That's a GREAT deal!!

The way i worked it was by calling to all the dealerships and getting quotes, but with all the 90k service items getting done.

When i told the head service guy that this price must include a new water pump, he said it that was fine, only the cost of the new part would be added...$111.75 to be exact.

Im still curious as to why the service mgr. thought it unneccessary to replace the tensioners and idler pulley. Should i call and request they be replaced as well?

My POV is that we should ONLY do to the truck what Toyota USA says we need to do to the truck. Toyota USA says ONLY replace the belt. AND replace any parts that look suspect. For example, only replace the cranks and cam seals if they leak, only replace the waterpump if it was not been serviced properly or if it is leaking, only replace the idlers if they look bad.

It sounds to me that you have replaced your coolant every other year as per Toyota USA's recommendations... you did this so that you would have piece of mind that your radiator, heater core, and water pump will last. If you are worried about your water pump, you might as well replace the rad and the heater core too... if the water-pump is suspect, then they are too.

Understand that the "since we are there" Waterpump replacement is a dealer recommendation NOT a recommendation of the manufacture. It comes from a day and time where the coolant was full if abrasive silicate, and the pump was driven from uber tight V belts. Neither have been the case since the 90's and yet this servicing "wives tale" remains...

Sparkplugs too... Look at the number of people who still swap out plugs every other year... A complete waste of money. The new rare-earth metal in most spark plugs and electronic ignition will often out last the car.

Price came to a little over $1300. I wouldnt say im HAPPY about the price, but i see it as an investement like i said. Now i know the wife will be safe.

BUT....to reinforce my purchase/decision of replacing the water pump, i am VERY LUCKY to have done it after what the tech who performed the entire service showed me. He told me my original water pump WAS LEAKING, but in a spot that wouldnt show the leak!!

Here's a picture that'll explain it:
water-pump4.jpg

Bottom line is im glad i got it done!:trophy:

Yeah, the service guy that went over the bill with me started explaining it, and it went something like this:

"well, we did this and this and blah blah, made sure your blah blah was changed, and yaddah yaddah is good to go....umm....wait....how did you?....Dude, you got over $2200 worth of work done for nearly half of that!"

Im a loyal customer and they've hooked me up a few times, so i have ZERO complaints about the dealership i give my business to.

My 08 had its 45k maint. done at this dealership. and they ballparked it at $350-ish. Mind you I bought the 08 4Runner in Feb. 2011 with 42,950 miles on it and it had over $1200 worth of work done to it (brakes, tires, etc) so I knew it wouldnt need much. Long story short, they barely charged me half the price and did the oil change, brake line bleed, flush, refill, clean and service the calipers, all the fuel additives, new cabin and air filters.
