90runner died and wont start

man. you two are absolutely right. I pulled the top cover off of the timing belt and there my belt was...in half. i was checking online to see how hard it would be to change it myself and it looks impossible without being in a shop. I was told i would need to have it lifted up because of how much work is needed to get to the second/third covers off. anyone have any advice on how i could do it myself? or how much it would cost me at a mechanics shop? if all it takes is me taking apart the front of the motor im convinced i can do it by laying underneath it. yay or nae?

im 17 dude and i did mine in my drive way with some help from my brother-in-law lol. its not hard. i did the waterpump and thermostat at the same time sinc i had it all appart. i did brake a couple of bolts..but my pump, belt, pullys, and thermostat were the ORIGINAL, with 200000 miles on them. if you have any specific questions im glad to help. the hardest part is getting the crankshaft bolt off..you need a sst (special service tool) but other than that its pretty much easy.

yeah it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be. i didnt need the sst. i was told its like a $150 part. screw that. i just put it in 5th gear and it never moved. took me 2 breaker bars to get it but it worked. my timing belt was the original. i have about 225k miles on her. it was so dry rotted you wouldn't believe haha

the water outlet is sealed. i waited about 2 hrs before driving it. i didn't see oil on the tip of the spark plug just around the threads. but even after i cleaned them off i still get alot of smoke coming from both sides where the spark plugs are. there isnt any oil in the radiator i checked and it never did over heat on me. remember that hose i was telling you about that comes off the top valve cover drivers side? it comes up and then a 90 deg fitting connects it to my MAF its broken and i didn't think it was a big deal. but i used some gorilla tape and tried to seal it off the best i could. but i started my truck and pull the hose off and my truck stalled. I called toyota and they don't even know what im talking about lol. do you know the proper name for this hose? it smells like gas/oil mixture that goes into the MAF. if i had a camera id take a picture. i'll check online to see if i can find one and show you

I am not positive, but it may be a pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) which vents crankcase fumes and gases back through your throttle body to burn. And that is more than likely your issue. How does it run? And did you get the timing set?

OK, to check if it is your head gasket, look inside your radiator for oil on top, pull the oil dip stick and see if the level is high. ( If coolant is present it would be at the bottom, raising the oil level ) If no oil in radiator, and normal oil level, a leakink valve cover may be the issue.

so i think its the PCV breather elbow is the part im talking about the breather hole is what im thinking about. its comes out of the valve cover right behind the oil cap. it comes up and runs into the MAF.

Do you have a junkyard near you?

im trying to find someone who has a parted out 4runner now. I found my leak too. My valve cover is leaking and its a pretty nasty leak. running it for about 30 minutes and its a constant drip. i think i may have burned up the seals when i started the truck without the radiator on to make sure it started. my mistake
