91 4wd/trans problem

Hi, I'm a noob with a question about a 4 runner

Im looking at picking up a 91 4runner 4wd. I was looking for some insight before I take a look at it. The guy that owns it says it will drive find in 4 Low only. If you put it in 4 High or 2wd it will not move at all. Has anyone ever run into a similar problem with their vehicle or can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

I've been googling it (how I found this forum too) and looking through some threads here. Seems like a cool site with lots of info too.

its a v6 automatic.

the transmission and transfer case are one unit with automatics, so it there is a problem with the 4wd it would be an expensive fix

might be shift solinoids would have to drop the pan to see if they are clicking when trans is shifted . might be able to do it with a stethescope against the pan !

I talked to the guy a bit about it. He said he was going up his driveway (up hill) and it just stopped going forward. Said it runs in reverse or 4low but in 4hi or 2wd the driveshafts do not spin but he can hear the trans spinning. Im going to set up a time to go physically look at it determine if I want to fool with it.
