92--Rear window problem

This is my first post here, I hear that problems with the rear windows are common in these trucks, so sorry if this has been covered before.

The rear window on my friends truck was stuck in the down position, I had a quick look at it for her but didnt have a wiring diagram to diagnose the problem. I checked the switch, when i pressed the up button nothing happened , I took the switch out and bridged the contacts and I could hear relays in the back clicking, but still no movement.

The next day she was driving around for a while it went up again. It seems to be an intermittent problem. Sometimes it wont go down sometimes it wont go up.It seems to work better after the truck has been driven around for a while.

Also, the key switch hasnt worked for years.

Anyone else have this problem, any ides?

Yeah fix it while the window still rolls down. Once it gets stuck UP how do you fix it. The door is closed? If you buy a service manual it will tell you how to test and troubleshoot to find the problem

You can clean the center console up/down switch for the tailgate motor,usually the gear on the tailgate motor strip and a replacement motor from cars are easy to find in junk yards for low price:

Most likely the rear window relay has gone bad. hopefully you can find it one on ebay or a junk yard becuase it is expensive from the dealer.
mine went out and I replaced the relay and started working like a charm.

I had a similar problem on my '91 when I got it. Mine would go up but not down though. I took the relay box off the bracket and pulled the circuit board out of it. (Easy if you're careful.) I plugged it back in and gave it a slight twist while the down switch was depressed. The window would go down if it was twisted. So I figured it was something mechanically wrong with the relay. There is a line of four in the center of the board, (they're rectangular, black boxes) There's a new relay part # from Omron that swaps out perfectly for about $1.70 at Newark Electronics. The only differance is that it's a wee bit taller. (not a problem, just different) I soldered it into the second position down (if you're holding the switch up by the plug) and that took care of the down direction. I don't know which one is the up relay, but what I did was I bought four (for <$12 with shipping) with the idea that I might have to swap them all out. I got lucky and did it the first time, so I have spares now.
I'll find them and post the superceding # in a day or two
