92 starter issues!

i am having issues with my truck tryin to start! i am only getting 1 click when i turn the key on. if i do this about 10 times it will start and run just fine. i believe is the starter but not 100%.
if it ends up being the starter are there any suggestions on the best way to change it? btw... the battery and terminals are about a month old. as weel as the timing belt and accessory belts. everything has worked fine since i had to do the crank/cam seals in March. thanks for the help as usual guys :moping:

do a search on it as it is my understanding that it could be the starter relay and not the starter itself.
One member Rumme just changed his starter and he did not sound like a happy camper.

When you say the battery terminals are about a month old do you mean the battery is as well, since they are attached? Unless you meant the cable connectors. I recently had a similar issue but it turned out my battery terminals (the knobs on the battery) had some minor, unnoticeable corrosion that gave me trouble starting. After about 10 minutes with a wire brush and scour pad I reconnected and BAM...up and running. Maybe try this, it could save time/money.

yeah I meant the connector itself. i did jump start it the other day and it started up ok but it took it a while to start! i will check the terminals tonight and the relay!!

I just went thru this problem...

the toyota tech told me it was my starter..so i replaced that...well..that didnt solve the problem./..

it was the starter relay...which is cheaper and easier to replace then the starter...

go to your fusebox under the hood, pull off the black fusebox cover...and there will be a 1" x 1" square block in there..labeled starter relay...

pull it out..and you can test it with a multimeter..or just buy a new one at advance auto parts for $35..

if that dont fix it..then its time for you to get out your 4 foot socket extension and cuss your brains out taking off the starter.

oh..1 other suggestion...if you have to take off the starter....you midas as well make the starter positive wire longer { the wire that plugs into the starter connection } ////

by making that connection longer..it makes it a bit easier to manipulate the starter into position when putting a new one back on.

Oh...if you need a new starter relay...listen up..

I called 4 places...Napa ..autozone, oreilly and advance auto..

the only one that had it was advance auto parts...the other 3 stores told me it was a dealer only part...if you have tio buy it from toyota dealer or ebay...it was over $50....adavnce auto had it for $33.

OH WHAT A FEELING !!!! TOYOTA.

LMAO!! what should it read on a dmm?? yeah when i was doin the seals a couple of months ago, i said that i never want to mess with the starter because it just looks like a pain in the ass. thanks rumme. i will check all these things tonight!

well i got home and cleaned all my connections, put in a new starter relay, and checked all my wires but still a no-go! i guess i get to cuss alot tomorrow afternoon!!!

Maybe if you ask nicely Rumme will share his "starter install" vocabulary, seemed to work for him and has made him Toyota's #1 fan. But I am sure you already knew that if you had any of his posts, you can feel the love....

LOL!! just looking at it pisses me off pretty bad! i changed the starter in my s10 blazer about a year ago and it took 15 minutes. its gonna take that long jackin it up and pulling the tire off

well the job wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. i think the hardest part (besides trying to wrestle the starter out of there) was keeping years of grime out of my mouth!! and that little flimsy ass bracket that holds the wires was kinda of hard to get back on.
on a side note i found a semi major oil leak on the drivers side. turns out that who ever did the last oil change on this vehicle does not know how to put on a damn oil filter. i know its like hand tight plus a have turn, but the key word was TIGHT! thanks again guys

Just got done doing an engine swap in a 90 pickup w// the 3.0 and the starter was fairly easy to get out and back in. didnt have to take the tire off. no lift on truck. just wondering what kind of problems were being ran into when removing the starter.

Starter Motor 92 4Runner

don't know if this is a common issue related to 92 4runners only
Mine is 2wd auto and this is the 3rd motor in 3 years. I'm lucky its covered by the warranty so I only have to pay the labor to install. But was wondering if his a unique issue only to me or this there a remedy to keep this from happening. Been lucky I haven't been stranded far from home
Appreciate any words of advice
